Nemesis Ending Explained

Why is Isaiah Obsessed With Coltrane?

Isaiah’s obsession with Coltrane started with a hunch when the latter’s four-man crew accidentally killed one of Isaiah’s trainees, Manny. Desperate to get revenge, he follows Coltrane’s subsequent heists, even when the department officially closes the case. This obsession slowly consumes every part of his life, ending in him alienating everyone around him. He not only pushes his family away by repeatedly ignoring them, but he also ignores protocols to go after Coltrane.

As a result, Isaiah’s recklessness ends up taking his life apart as his obsession had long since left the need for vengeance behind. He had become the person he hated and didn’t even know it until it was too late.

What was Coltrane’s Plan?

Coltrane’s plan was always to leave this criminal world behind and live a happy life with Ebony. However, when she had her miscarriage, it almost destroyed them, and that’s when Coltrane decided to pull off the last few robberies to set them up for life. However, after two police officers die during a diamond heist and Deon steals an expensive watch, Coltrane finds himself getting deeper and deeper into danger. The more he tried to get out, the worse things just kept getting.

Throughout the season, he was simply focused on survival and taking care of Ebony and his crew, but things simply went haywire the more crimes he committed.

Isaiah and Coltrane get into a dangerous back-and-forth after Isaiah leaves behind his objectivity, which ends up getting too deep while trying to stop Coltrane. His recklessness results in Coltrane calming, pinning Amos’s murder, and, with no other evidence, no one believes Isaiah. Isaiah ends up behind bars, but not before the police realise that it actually is Coltrane behind Amos’s murder, thanks to Candace.

After he goes on the run, Noah, to get revenge for Amos’s murder, starts to stalk Coltrane, hoping to kill him. It ends with Noah with a bullet in his leg, and Isaiah has to let Coltrane get away to save his son.

After learning everything that Coltrane has been up to and realising that everyone has been backstabbing her since the start, Ebony decides to take her life into her own hands and leave them behind. However, she isn’t able to go through with the escape and stays back to help Coltrane as well. In the end, Ebony is arrested after she confesses to Candace and is busted out of prison by Charlie. Although we don’t see what exactly happened to her, it’s clear that she’s safe for now.

Does Isaiah Save His Marriage?

Throughout the series, Isaiah and Candace are constantly at odds with one another as she desperately tries to save her marriage. However, as Isaiah grows more and more distant, Candace finds herself drowning in the lies and dangerous situations that she and Noah find themselves in because of him.

In the end, looking for comfort, she goes to Malik Jacobs, and the two have an affair. Although it’s not clear whether they break up, it’s clear that the differences have gotten too wide for Candace.

What Does the Ending Mean?

Nemesis tries to focus on how obsession can corrupt a person’s identity, regardless of how good a person they are. From the beginning, Isaiah has been shown as a model cop, and he and Coltrane have been on opposite sides of the law. However, slowly, the gap starts to lessen as the bodies start to pile up and, in the end, it’s almost impossible to separate their actions from one another. Both men are ready to give up anything for a chance to get revenge and win in the end, and it destroys the very core of their character.

The ending, thus, ultimately implies that revenge doesn’t solve anything and ends up hurting one even more. Isaiah almost loses both his wife and son, and so does Coltrane. Although everyone physically survives, none are mentally safe after the choices that they make.

Is Nemesis Season 2 on the Cards?

Nemesis ends on a cliffhanger, with Coltrane getting away and reminding Isaiah that he will never win. The thread ultimately stays unresolved, and thus, it seems like a second season might just be a possibility since the series deliberately avoids closure. Nemesis Season 2 will probably focus on whether both Isaiah and Coltrane will be able to move on from their obsessions and have a stable and happy life, and whether their families can overcome the trauma that they have endured. Or will they fall into the same patterns and continue to destroy one another until there’s nothing left? We will just have to wait and watch.
