In Stranger Things 4, we see Dr. Brenner making Eleven recall her time at the Hawkins lab to help her relive her trauma and experience to gain her superpowers back. During the last experiment of helping out Eleven with snippets from her life, we find out that the Hawkins Lab Massacre was actually not committed by Eleven but, One, who turned out to be one of the helpers at the lab. We find out that One is Victor Creel’s son and was brought to the lab by Dr. Brenner after the death of his mother and sister and the imprisonment of his father.

One was the first child at Hawkins lab with a superpower, and it was through his help Dr. Brenner created more kids with superpowers, one of them being Eleven herself. After the Hawkins Lab Massacre, an angry Eleven used all her power to end one, inevitably opening a door to the Upside Down and condemning him there instead. This is where One turned into Vecna.

While we get to know Vecna’s origins from Eleven’s memory, simultaneously, we see Vecna recount his story to Nancy, who fell into the Upside Down while crossing from the Watergate realm to the normal world. According to Vecna, he has always been an anomaly, different and with powers. He haunted his family with these powers, but when her mother got to know of his malicious intentions, he did not waste any time and killed his mother and his sister and pinned the murders on his father, Victor Creel.

However, he was never able to be free as Dr Brenner took him into his care on the recommendation of Victor Creel’s wife before her death. He became One and thus came into existence at Hawkins Lab, met Eleven and had a showdown with her, ending up eventually in the Upside Down and cursing, haunting people to death.
