Get Out

Chris and Rose have been together for long enough to meet each other’s parents. The only problem is that Chris think that Rose’s parents wouldn’t like him because he’s Black. He could not be more wrong. Her parents love him, and things are amazing, but the fact that everyone helping in the house is Black too, is setting off some bells in Chris’ mind. When he looks deeper, he finds the family part of something much more sinister. Get Out is currently streaming on Netflix.

Bones and All

Lee and Maren have something in common, eating people. After figuring it out, the two of them get together to go somewhere far away from law enforcement to make sure that no one can catch them. There is not much plot in the story but focuses on the two characters as they come of age and struggle with their personalities within the conventional societies expectations of people. Bones and All can be rented from Amazon Prime Video.

Prometheus

An exploration to space goes horribly wrong when human beings interfere in a system they know nothing about. However, that is not what this writer is referring to when they talk about the human body. For those who have seen the film, they know about a certain reflection scene causing fear and another one in the medical pod that truly distinguishes this film for this list. Prometheus is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

Cloud Atlas

In a story spanning centuries, generations and leaders, this film tells the story about interconnecting characters and storylines. The concepts of birth and death are cyclical in this film. There is always an opportunity that the characters will meet each other in another life. There is no one protagonist but a collection of lives that intertwine together to create a coherent story and a history that is unimaginable. Cloud Atlas is currently streaming on Netflix.

The Platform

There are tiers in this prison, and people are forced to eat only that which is leftover from what the people above have eaten. In a surprising take on wealth, power and the human tendency to be disgusting, this film explores all the base instincts we as homo sapiens repress. Everyone is hungry, and everyone is ready to fight. This Spanish film truly takes the microscope on humanity’s worse ideas and magnifies them to a hundred. The Platform is currently streaming on Netflix.

Snowpiercer

Directed by Bong Joon-ho, this film is about a train where the rich occupy the first few cars while the train makes its away around the planet. Now that the outside world is truly inhabitable and cold, the inside replicates it exactly. In the director’s classic fashion of symbolism, the train becomes a symbol for the world and the trickle down effect of the resources on this small train. Population must be controlled but only for those who can’t fight against this rule. Snowpiercer is currently streaming on Showtime.
