Saare Jahan Se Accha Review

In this Netflix espionage series, there are a ton of hard-hitting lines and victorious moments that will leave viewers hooked to its every word. With Independence Day just around the corner, Saare Jahan Se Accha comes at a perfect time to capitalise on viewers’ patriotic spirits, offering a hard-hitting show that will entertain you to no end.

The series, featuring 6 somewhat short episodes, is an enjoyable watch, regardless, making you take notice of the contributions of the Indian intelligence agencies and the hundreds of people who risk their lives every day to keep us safe. It’s a heartening and heartbreaking watch all under one cover and will leave most viewers engaged.

The central storyline follows R&AW agent Vishnu Shankar and his team trying to stop Pakistan from creating their first atom bomb, right after the death (or murder?) of physicist Homi J. Bhabha and the lengths that these people have to go to to make it happen. There is no recognition, and there is mostly no support, but the job has to be done well and on time so that innocent civilians don’t lose their lives.

The series is somewhat similar in tone to other “patriotic” shows and films that we have watched over the years. It highlights our wins and gives us a reason to cheer for everyone who keeps us safe. Saare Jahan Se Accha is also appropriately thrilling, as we get a glimpse into how intelligence agencies have their eyes and ears everywhere. Of course, one can question how some of the things that do end up happening to us go by them if the network is this deep-seated and intense, but that’s a conversation for another time, I suppose.

Either way, we see Shankar covertly trying to gather intel and stop Murtaza Bhutto from realising his and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s dreams of building an atomic bomb. The series deftly portrays the diplomatic relationships that exist between countries and how different spy organisations help each other to further their own political goals. It’s an interesting watch, one that we have watched before, and thus, it all makes you question how it is different from any other show in the past.

I think the series is made entertaining mostly due to the stellar cast and their performances, and not for the storyline that feels rather stale at this point. Not that spies trying to thwart a rival nation’s plans isn’t thrilling, it’s just that this entire setup is very obvious and stale. There’s nothing here that we haven’t seen before, which makes the plot progression somewhat obvious and uninspired. But then again, there are so many ways one can retell history… at some point it all gets a little stale!

Saare Jahan Se Accha is definitely an engaging watch that, although nothing new, is enjoyable due to its good performances and fast pace. Could it have been better? Sure, why not? But there are only so many ways one can retell history, and I think we have reached that upper limit at this point!
