Reign of the Seven Spellblades Episode 5 Review- Glare

Let’s discuss a little about the previous week’s attack and what that tells us about the current and general state of stories based on worlds where magic is prevalent. In the last episode, we saw multiple students getting absolutely razed down with blood sprouting out of them, with Oliver and Nanao having to fight for their lives. You would assume something would be made of this, or people would care that children died in a situation that could easily be avoided. You would be wrong.

The show moved on pretty quickly from the previous events, with not more than a couple of lines of dialogue needed to dismiss the event in its entirety. The reason behind that being possible? No one died. Yes, not even the student who got his face chopped. They were all just fine in this episode. You can call that bad and lazy writing, but I won’t. I call that a side effect of building a story like this in a world where healing magic exists to cure every bad thing that could happen. The weight of consequences is far less in worlds like this.

The mystery behind Oliver continues to widen, as there is now absolutely no way he is a normal first-year student of the school. He seems to be more competent than people years older than him, and his skills have been noticed by people who are on the same level or better at magic than them. Despite this, he doesn’t seem to come from a noble house, given nobody has heard of his last name. He is always at the centre of everything mysterious happening at the school, just like this time.

Katie’s story certainly was going somewhere, although this doesn’t seem like the best use for it. Her kindness towards the troll had consequences, and it wasn’t hard to predict where things were going. However, the story beyond this point is as tired and played out as anything in anime. There could have been more to this than this, and to think that this has been further linked back to the attacks from the previous episode means that this is what that fight led to and nothing else. I was expecting more from that, but the show didn’t care as much as I did.

Still, this was a solid episode, if nothing else. The dialogue was engaging, and so were the independent events that happened during its runtime. Each member of the group (they really need to start calling them by a name soon) got some screentime to discuss the events, and we got the expected turnaround from Mr Andrews. This also revealed something interesting about the first episode, which saw the troll set upon Katie, although we will be in a better position to discuss that in the next review.
Verdict
Reign of the Seven Spellblades Episode 5 was an underwhelming follow-up to the action-packed fight we saw in the previous episode. It was also more predictable than the show has been before.
