Reign of the Seven Spellblades Episode 6 Review- Arise

There was a show that aired last season that had the interest and attention of the entire anime-loving crowd despite being an original and not being a shonen anime. That show was, of course, Oshi no Ko. It did that with the help of very strong writing, yes, but the biggest proponent of it doing that well was hidden in how it was produced. The showrunner crafted a near-perfect feature-length first episode that left all fans in a daze that took them the entire length of the season to recover from.

What is the point of bringing that up here? Well, a big one. Had Reign of the Seven Spellblades Episode 6 been the first one to air from this series, this show would have been well on its way to achieving a status similar to Oshi no Ko. That is how good of an episode it was. Sure, it required some building up from the show’s end and followed an episode which was the show’s weakest so far, but it all served a purpose- to craft an episode this cool.

From the beginning of the episode, the Milligan fight was portrayed as more than the sum of its parts. Oliver and Nanao were clearly outmatched by the senior with a Madusa’s eye, but strength and tricks aren’t all there is to it when it comes to magic. Oliver has shown himself to be an extremely capable planner in the heat of the battle, and he makes a very good one in this episode. He doesn’t foresee what comes next, but no one could.

Spellblades are an interesting concept. Tools that do not have an answer and can result in an instant end to the battle can lead to some raw moments in storytelling like we just saw happen. Strangely enough, there were two of these moments in just this episode, as we also saw the reveal of what Oliver is all about, the secrets he has been hiding, and the purpose behind his coming to this university in the first place. It was a fantastic reveal that the show executed with perfection.

For a show that was feeling directionless, this was just the shot in the arm it needed. There was plenty more happening in this episode, as we saw Katie deal with being betrayed by a senior that she trusted, and despite how she has been portrayed in the show, her mentality is a very refreshing one in shows like this. It won’t make you cry like it did Oliver, but you’ll feel better about having her around. Overall, I can’t recommend this episode enough. It has taken me all I have not to talk about spoilers in this review.
Verdict
Reign of the Seven Spellblades Episode 6 was a tremendously exciting episode where the power dynamics of the show shifted towards the extreme, and the story became much darker. It is a very welcome change.
