MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 54 Review: Time is Money

MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 54 is called ‘Time Shopping Immunity Challenge’. Contestants Julie, Sarah and Alwin, will be a part of the immunity challenge. The contestant who cooks the best dish today will be the first to be in the top 5 and won’t be a part of Sunday’s elimination challenge. Judges Andy Allen, Melissa Leong and Jock Zonfrillo, inform the rules to the contestants.

The synopsis reads, “Today, contestants purchase their ingredients, using time as their currency. The more ingredients they purchase, the less time on the clock.”

MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 54 Recap/Review Contains Spoilers

In MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 54, Julie, Alwin and Sarah get 90 minutes to prepare a dish. However, the only ingredients available to them are the under-bench staples. The contestants have to buy ingredients from Coles. They will have to pay for every ingredient they buy by giving up 5 minutes from their 90 minutes.

After buying the ingredients needed for their dish, Julie is left with 70 minutes, Alwin has 60 mins, and Sarah has 40 minutes left. Julie decides to make an orange-ginger cake and ice cream. Jock is concerned about the huge quantity she decides to bake. But Julie is confident that she will be able to bake the cake on time.

Sadly, Julie runs out of time, and her cake is not properly baked till the very last minute. She decides to cut a good piece out of it and serve it with the ice cream. Her dish is called Orange Upside-down cake with Orange-Ginger ice cream. The judges love the taste of the cake.

Sarah decides to cook a Maharashtrian Prawn Curry. She burns her curry leaves masala and has to start all over again. Yet, in just 40 minutes, Sarah serves a delicious Maharaja Prawn Curry dish with buns. All the three judges praise Sarah’s curry and the cook on the prawns.

Alwin’s dish is called Sticky Pork with steamed buns and pickled ginger. The judges enjoy the Sticky Pork element in Alwin’s food and say that ginger has only lifted the taste of the entire dish. However, the buns are a bit of a put-off.

After tasting all the three dishes, the judges announce that Julie has won the MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 54’s Time Shopping Immunity Challenge. Julie is the first contestant in the Top 5 who will be safe from Sunday’s elimination.

MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 54 Review: Final Thoughts

The competition seemed fair in the beginning until the judges announced who won the challenge. I can’t believe a contestant who didn’t even manage to bake their cake properly is the first to enter the Top 5! Sarah’s dish was complete, and despite burning half of her dish initially, she respected the show enough to start cooking again.

It’s disappointing to see the judges being so favourable towards Julie. I am pretty sure if it were some other contestants instead of Julie, they would’ve considered the cake a whole dish, not just a piece.
