Maa Neella Tank Review

The entertaining and comedy-filled series starts off with the Sarpanch Kodandam’s son Gopal threatening to jump off the only water tank in the village which has not finished construction in years. This incident creates a base for the series that is filled with many elements connected to the sarpanch and the water tank. Gopal climbing up on the water tank focuses the villagers’ attention on the water tank which they had hoped would start operating after electing Kodandam as the sarpanch, but only left them disappointed. The water tank is a topic for their disappointment in the people with power while the incident with Gopal is a source of their amusement.

The show has is filled with satirical humour that shows the benefits that people with power have over those that are oppressed by them. While the son of the sarpanch can get the woman he wants just because of an infatuation, the police officer has to work hard for a recommendation letter and lie to the woman he loves. It also shows that while the village is aware of the situation that the girl has to face, no one is willing to speak up for her and just accept that she is mutually in love with Gopal. With the series being set in a village, we see that the roots of corruption and power misuse are deeply etched in society today.

Maa Neella Tank is a humour-filled show that shows reality through its characters and this review cannot be complete without discussing them some of the iconic characters.

Kodandam just wants to get out of this act that his son has put forth and get him married to the daughter of an MLA, which in turn will help him gain more power and money. He is the epitome of those with neverending greed for power. First, he marries the daughter of the family he served, then shows male dominance in society, becomes the sarpanch on the basis of his lower caste and now he wants to form a connection through marriage with a higher power for his materialistic benefits. This is the situation with those in politics and this cannot be denied.

Vamshi is a police officer who had come to the village with the hopes of doing a good job and solving cases, but when he saw what the situation is actually like, it changed him. Now all he wants is to get transferred to another place but he needs a recommendation letter which can only be given to him by Kodandam. He finds the chance to obtain this letter when Gopal keeps asking for Surekha, but when he meets her he falls in love. He shows us the realistic nature of some people who don’t dwell on things like love, but we also see his soft nature which changes his goal of letting Surekha go to Gopal.

Surekha is a character that we cannot miss. She is smart, beautiful and a woman who wants to be independent for she has been living under her stepmother’s bias for a very long time. She does not want to marry Gopal and is hell-bent on getting out of this predicament. She is the model of the modern woman who wants to break free from the chains of society and establish her identity. But she, like Vamshi, is oppressed by the powerful sarpanch’s family. He is unable to get a recommendation letter for his transfer, and she is unable to get out of a marriage with Gopal.

Other characters to point out are, Gopal- the powerful but foolish son of Kodandam who gets what he wants because of his father. Even if it is a girl he is just infatuated with for a silly reason. PA Gurumurthy- the middle man between Kodandam and everyone else, who fakes the records and steals from everyone. Chamundi- the wife of Kodandam who is easily influenced by her family but is a sly woman when it comes to stealing from the people and showing her power. Narasimha- the politician who belongs to an upper caste and believes that he should have power instead of someone like Kodandam, and with his manipulative nature he is able to give Kodandam good competition.

Summing Up: Maa Neella Tank

Altogether, the series is well made and very smooth in conveying its message which makes it worth the watch. I went to this series with almost no expectation and it has definitely impressed me. The gossipy villagers, the internet crazy youngsters who are chasing online fame, the real-life issues that are hardly taken seriously and the people who just want to get away from this messy village. Everything about this show is entertaining and the subtitles make it accessible for anyone to check out.
