Kleo is a German spy thriller series where, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a former East German spy resolves to find out who betrayed her and why — and uses her lethal skills to exact revenge. The series is created by Richard Kropf, Hanno Hackfort and Bob Konrad. There are 8 episodes in total with a runtime of about 44-56 minutes respectively.

In the series Jella Haase plays the titular role of Kleo, alongside Dimitrij Schaad as Sven, Julius Feldmeier as Thilo, Vladimir Burlakov as Andi Wolf, Vincent Redetzki as Uwe Mittig, Marta Sroka as Anja, Yun Huang as Min Sun, Alessija Lause as Anne Geike, Thandi Sebe as Jenny, Jürgen Heinrich as Otto Straub and others.

Plot

In the year 1987, shortly after liquidating a businessman in West Berlin on behalf of a secret Stasi commando, top East German spy Kleo is arrested, denounced by the Stasi and even betrayed by her own grandfather. After two years in prison, the Berlin Wall suddenly falls and Kleo is released.

But she soon realizes that the conspiracy against her is much more complicated than she thought and that an ominous red suitcase is a key to it all. She then embarks on a revenge spree that leads her through the anarchic Berlin, improvised electro clubs and Mallorcan fincas all the way to Chile’s Atacama Desert – with the West Berlin policeman Sven constantly on her tail, chasing the case of a lifetime.

Kleo Ending Explained

As seen in the series, Kleo loses her baby in prison and after getting out, she goes back to indicting jury to get her case file and find out the reason for imprisonment, where she finds the audio tape of her grandpa. He refutes all the claims made by her and calls her mentally ill, taking after her mother. This leads to grandpa getting shot at by her.

Still from Kleo

She then buries him by pouring concrete over his grave. Then she traces down Colonel Blum and then goes after Comrade Colonel Wieczorek, who was presumed dead but turned out to be living a new life in Mallorca. Driving them to their unfortunate fate, she finally gets some more clues when she gets to Comrade Erich Mielke.

He tells her that the man she killed in her last mission in club Eden, wasn’t the CIA chief of West Berlin, then who was the man that she killed? Here she takes Sven’s help by saving his life from her own hatched killing plan. He tracks down the tailor shop where the man got his suit and gets to know about the red suitcase.

Apparently, she killed a man who had such information that could have caused the GDR and the world to collapse. From federal head Anne Geike to Jorge in Chile, the unlikely duo get on their pursuit of the red suitcase. Meanwhile, Jorge gets into a road accident while trying to shoot Sven, Kleo gets poisoned by Ramona Makarov (the agent living as Andi Wolf’s wife).

Sven is able to save her with the antidote as well as get the map with the location marked. It is the clue to finding the suitcase. But on the way they find Ramona again and a car chase ensues, leading to Kleo & Sven’s car toppling down. Ramona tries to put them on fire while being stuck in the upside-down car, and her water breaks.

They help her in delivering the baby and in return, Ramona tells them the exact location where they find the suitcase and take it to their hotel room. The suitcase contains documents about the agreement between GDR and the United States. The USA was financing the GDR, to preserve the status quo in the region.

If a secret like that about such back door deals comes out, it would destroy the major Superpowers leading to the world collapse. That’s when Margot Hornecker (who had given Ramona the mission to fetch the suitcase) comes knocking down on their door and offers Kleo, information about her mother in exchange for it.

In spite of Sven’s resistance, Kleo chooses to find her mother and thus, Sven informs Min Sun about it. She steals the suitcase by replacing it at the airport security check. While Kleo finally gets to meet her mother, she gets rejected by her as she doesn’t want her present life, which she built after lots of struggle, to be affected by her past.

In the end, we see Min Sun delivering the suitcase to the USA envoy and getting money in return. Margot’s red suitcase is filled with toilet rolls and Ramona is seen happy with her child in Chile. Meanwhile, Sven spills the bean about the suitcase not getting into Margot’s hands and Kleo runs after him, calling him a betrayer. And Thilo is taken away by aliens (which is a bit strange).

Kleo is currently streaming on Netflix.
