The new thriller mini-series Inside Man revolves around a so-called death row detective (played by Stanley Tucci) who unravels a complicated case for a journalist, involving a vicar and a math tutor. The four-episode series is created by Steven Moffat (Sherlock, Doctor Who) and is helmed by Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin, Victor Frankenstein).
The cast of the series includes Tucci as Jefferson Grieff, David Tennant as Harry Watling, Dolly Wells as Janice Fife, Lydia West as Beth Davenport, Dylan Baker as Casey, Atkins Estimond as Dillon Kempton, Lyndsey Marshal as Mary Watling, Louis Oliver as Ben Watling, and Eke Chukwu as Keith. Moreover, the average runtime of each episode is one hour.

The premise of the series arrives rapidly on point with the objective introduction of the characters. Harry Watling (played by David Tenant) is a vicar, who performs his duties with all good intentions. One day, a troublesome parishioner from the church, hands him over a flash drive (in an attempt to escape his protective mother), and ends up creating a domino effect that will give Harry the hell of his life.
Meanwhile, a death row convict, Jefferson Grieff (played by Stanley Tucci) solves certain cases revolving around women and abuse to repent for his moral worth. The detective gets involved with the Vicar and his domino effect, through a journalist Beth Davenport. And ends up connecting all the pieces of this thoroughly engaging aptly paced puzzle.
The series maintains a top-notch consistency, right from the start until the very end. The opening act surrounding the convict detective’s first case is intriguing enough to hook you completely with utmost curiosity. Furthermore, Steven Moffat’s traditional mannerisms are successful in establishing a high point in the setup, which is something that he maintains throughout.

The traditional folk song “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” is the theme song of the series. And is also a delight to hear every time, when the situation becomes tense and grip-worthy. It is layered perfectly with the cliffhanger moments and becomes a separate element of its own.
I have always loved watching Stanley Tucci (The Terminal, The King’s Man) in almost every role he has ever done, and The Inside Man is no exception. His performance gets everything spot on, and also manages to form a short and satisfying arc in just four episodes. Moreover, David Tenant completely absorbs the panic-ridden vicar, and nails all the nuances of nervousness.
Somehow, the series framework reminded me of BBC thriller, Bodyguard(2018). Another terrific thriller show proves the network’s monopoly in curating mini-series around the genre. All in all, the series is pitch-perfect, finely layered, and absolutely refreshing.
