Everything to Know About Josephine: Sometimes, some things happen to children before they even have the right words to explain, and the adults who are looked to for answers in the utopian setup are just lost, trying to fix things they cannot understand! Josephine, the upcoming crime drama thriller written and directed by Beth de Araújo, moves around in a similar territory.
The film stars Mason Reeves, Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan and follows an eight-year-old girl whose life takes a horrific turn after she witnesses a crime. What follows is a story about fear, confusion and desperate need for safety that lingers long after the actual incident is over.
If you are the kind of movie-watcher who likes to look beyond the crime, into the real emotional damage that remains, here is everything to know about the upcoming thriller, Josephine
Everything to Know About Josephine: What Is It About?
The movie Josephine centres around eight-year-old Josephine, who witnesses a crime in Golden Gate Park. Witnessing the crime changes how she perceives the world, and she begins acting out as she struggles to regain control over her own safety.
The adults meanwhile find themselves in a rather difficult position. They try to console her and help her feel secure again, but what is it like to comfort a child who has experienced something she cannot even process fully? Is it as easy as it happens to sound? Does telling the child that everything would be fine normalise everything?
This is perhaps where the premise gets interesting, because for Josephine, the world she knew has become a place where terrible things can happen suddenly, but the adults around her might understand the situation differently. However, their explanations and reassurances cannot automatically undo whatever she witnessed. The film seems to be focusing on the emotional aftermath of the crime itself.
Who Directed Josephine?
Beth de Araújo is credited with both the direction and writing of the film Josephine. The filmmaker is known for uncomfortable storytelling, and this project adds to the menu now. Going by the synopsis, the film does not seem to be merely interested in presenting a horrifying event for a dramatic spectacle, but it perhaps examines how a child might carry the memory of something she was never prepared for.
The subject of the story is undeniably difficult, but the central question seems to be something that happens to be at the core of the familial setting.
Josephine Cast
The film brings together three central characters, each having a different place in the family’s struggle to deal with the consequences of witnessing the crime. Mason Reeves plays the eight-year-old Josephine at the centre of the story. The role requires Reeves to portray a child struggling with fear and confusion before she has the complete emotional vocabulary to make complete sense. Channing Tatum plays Josephine’s father, Damien, while Gemma Chan plays Josephine’s mother, Claire, both perhaps dealing with the emotional toll on the family while also protecting their child.

The cast list also includes Philip Ettinger, Syra McCarthy, Eleanore Pienta, Dana Millican, Michael Angelo Covino, Stefanie Estes, Michael X. Sommers, Jimmy Dahroug, Eugen Chrysofakis, Bettina Chrysofakis-Baiduc, Eros Bleu-Laine, Hunter Bold, Sedrick Cabrera, and Grace Kelly Quigley.
Why Is Josephine Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Something feels heartbreaking about stories in which children are forced to confront the uglier parts of the adult world at an age when it is rather difficult for them to process. They do not necessarily have the words to describe the fear, and their reactions might not even always make sense to the people trying to help them.
Josephine also seems to be raising an uncomfortable question about the family setting and the adult responsibility of protecting a child, which does not necessarily mean shielding them from every difficult truth. The film also won the Grand Jury Award and the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival 2026.
Final Thoughts
Josephine begins with an incident, but the real story seems to be lying in everything that comes after. It looks to be about a little girl trying to reclaim a sense of safety, parents trying to discover that love cannot immediately erase fear and a family struggling their way out after an experience that none of them can just leave behind.
With Beth de Araújo’s writing and direction, and Mason Reeves, Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan at the centre of the story, the film appears to be an emotionally intense look at childhood trauma and the complicated business of trying to feel safe. Some stories leave us wondering about the crime, while some leave us thinking about the people who have to live with its aftermath.
Josephine is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 20, 2026.
