First Lady Ending Explained

The season opens with Min-cheol winning the presidential campaign, thanks to the undying support of his wife, Su-yeon, who is the mastermind behind him. Along with her, Min-cheol’s biggest supporter is his secretary, Hae-rin, who is ruthless and only interested in seeing him win and pass a special act. The series’ main focus is on Min-cheol immediately declaring divorce after his win, as well as attempting to pass a special act that aims to uncover the details behind a fire that occurred at a chemical plant a few years ago.

From the first, Su-yeon tries to stop Min-cheol from passing the Special Act by influencing all of the other members of parliament, as well as him, from going through with the divorce. However, that doesn’t work out as Min-cheol refuses to simply give in to her demands.

Why doesn’t Su-yeon want the truth to come out?

Despite Su-yeon’s initial support of the Special Act, she desperately tries to stop the act from being passed after he comes to power. Although the real reason remains a mystery at first, it slowly becomes clear that it might have been Su-yeon who was after the fire incident, and she doesn’t want her husband to find out about it. As Min-cheol later learns from Sang-hee, it was Su-yeon who covertly attacked the H Group chemical plant workers when they started to stage a protest, but didn’t account for the fire to start.

Fearing her husband’s wrath, she wanted him to forget about the incident in hopes of saving her marriage. But, watching his friends getting hurt and losing a close confidant left Min-cheol desperate for revenge and answers, and he continues to push at whatever the personal cost.

Who is Hwa-jin?

In the midst of the chemical factory mess, Hwa-jin, whom Su-yeon had thought to be Min-cheol’s mistress, comes out and declares that she’s his biological daughter. It leaves everyone shocked, and we later learn that Min-cheol was in a relationship with Soo-jeong, who was killed in an accident. Hwa-jin is her daughter with Min-cheol, whose existence he was unaware of.

How was Soo-jeong killed?

Although at first everyone thinks that Soo-jeong was killed by Su-yeon, after her car was found at the crime scene, Hae-rin comes forward with proof that it was she who accidentally killed Soo-jeong and kept the truth under wraps to help Min-cheol win the election at first. Her husband also died in the H Chemical fire, and so, for her, revenge was more important than anything else. Now that she has achieved these goals, she is okay with telling the police the truth and facing the consequences.

After Min-cheol learns the truth from Sang-hee, he confronts Su-yeon. She not only tells him that she started the fire but that she used him, knowing well that he would have the easiest path to becoming the president, to get back at her father for killing her mother. This devastates Min-cheol.

Later, Hoon kidnaps Ji-yoo to lure Su-yeon with his recording, and then tries to kill the duo along with Hye-jin. Thankfully, Su-yeon saves them all with Min-cheol’s help, but he is trapped when the building collapses after being set on fire. A devastated Su-yeon decides to tell the Special Acts committee the truth, and eventually, the firefighters are able to find Min-cheol in the rubble after days. Although we don’t know for sure whether he’s alive, Su-yeon seems hopeful for a happy ending for them.
