Far From Home Review: Bland Series that Never Picks Up

Far From Home is a Nigerian series that revolves around an aspiring artist Ishaya, who lands himself in grave danger while pursuing his dream. The series is created by Damilola Elebe and Chinaza Onuzo and stars Mike Afolarin in a titular role.

The complete cast of the show includes Funke Akindele, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Mike Afolarin, Elma Mbadiwe, Adesua Etomi, Bolanle Ninalowo, and Bimbo Akintola. Furthermore, the series is divided into five episodes with an average runtime of thirty-five to fifty minutes and is written by Dami Elebe, and Chinaza Onuzo.

The series starts with the introduction of Ishaya, who instantly wakes up from his rich and successful dream, and picks up the daily activities of his struggling life. Moreover, the young and ambitious lad from Lagos is mostly involved in cleaning homes, and sells street art, as a way of supporting his dreams.

One day, in an attempt to hustle his way out, he steals a load of cash from the local pub owner/drug mafia and involves himself in an erratic mess. One that consumes not only his dream but brings his entire family into life-threatening danger.

Meanwhile, the protagonist also enrols himself in a top university in Africa, only to become the local drug peddler on the campus. He also manages to contact trouble from all ends and diminishes his dream to become an artist, episode by episode. What happens next is a series of basic, dull and lifeless moments, that just feels too difficult to watch.

This five-part show tries to establish all the elements of drama, thriller and a little bit of comedy, into one single unit and fails desperately in the attempt. For instance, the part where Ishaya hides the cheating note from his employer feels like a basic attempt at undermining the elementary intellect of the audience.

The plot further complicates itself when Ishaya starts doing business with the college brats and ends up getting high on the same drugs. The entire sequence is absolutely artificial and is even more painful to comprehend.

Notably, the rest of the events in the series, are equally disappointing and feel extremely dumbed down. The cliffhangers are also typically cliche and only add to the fatigue. And even though the screenplay tries to add some curiosity, the fractured setup prevents it from shining.

All in all, the series is a sluggish and over-dramatic watch, along with a conviction-ridden job from the actors and writers. The only part that generates some sort of humour throughout this wanna-be drama, is the leopard that devours people, for the smallest of reasons.

The show lacks nearly everything to generate a fraction of intrigue and feels highly stretched and complicated. Furthermore, the first episode of the series itself feels like a warning, to save you from the rest of the act.

  1. Bad faith review. I am not a series watcher but I enjoyed this one.
The series is engaging and explores the divide between the wealthy and the poor, and the challenges to pursue success at any cost.
Ishaya is an anti hero that any person who has struggled in life to level up can empathize with.
The characters are well developed. A must see

  2. Review is highly misleading.
Kindly ignore this bland review of a spectacular work of creativity.
Please i need this series to continue pleasee.

  3. A great series with a great cast with me being a Kenyan who is not willing to watch African movies I wanna say this was worth my time and I don’t regret it at all. My rating I would rate it a solid 4 out of 5. Without any bias. A great masterpiece.

  4. Haha! Which kind review be dis? This series makes a lot of sense, highlights key societal issues including how poverty and inequality affects life experiences, drug use and abuse, corruption amongst others. Me I just dey wait for season 2 to drop. Solid 4.6. Would rate even higher if I didn’t have to wait for the second season lol

  5. Coming from an Indian who’s typically racist of blacks, I’m not even surprised. Your review is trash! For people who are interested, the series is good and very enjoyable

  6. Whoever wrote this review is a bitter soul. What a great series, one of the best I’ve ever seen. This person is transferring his/her personal troubled aggression on this review. Nonsense

I am not a fan of series’ but Far from Home is a master piece. The plot, plot twists, lessons learned, cast, suspense, was nicely put together. I rate it 9.5/10.
