Doctor X Episode 8 Review
Director Boo’s Flashback and The Current Crisis
The episode begins by showing us generations of doctors who graduated from Guseo. We learn that Director Boo didn’t come from a prestigious medical family and that his awards were overlooked. However, his teachers recognised his skills, and he was chosen to lead the Hippocratic oath ceremony. This makes us understand why, in the later part of the episode, he looks up at the Hippocrates statue, especially after Su-jeong just walks past him. Ma’am, he is honourable, so please give him the respect.
The episode then switches to the 2020 doctors’ strike and the 2026 crisis that’s going on. The doctors are collectively protesting that they will stop working. This is pretty much understand that doctors indeed need to fight for their rights but them stepping away can cause a lot of people some issues, especially patients.

Patients Suffer
Despite holding two specialist certificates, Dr Ma is worried about his position, as newly qualified elite doctors can easily take it up. At the same time, the public’s frustration is understandable because many surgeries are getting cancelled and the patients are being transferred to other hospitals. This episode shows both the issues with doctors and how patients’ lives are put at risk.
The most heartbreaking example is Ga-eul, a small girl who is raised by her grandmother after her parents died during the previous strike. Apparently, the parents were moved between hospitals, and Dr Bae couldn’t come on time. Ga-eul’s story becomes sensational news, especially since she is also in need of surgery and her parents’ lives were lost during a similar strike. However, Su-jeong decides to operate on Ga-eul despite the complex procedure.

Doctors and Their Conflicts
Su-jeong and Do Yun-sik are two different contrasts for us viewers to watch and enjoy. When he questions how she can dismiss the possibility of failure, she states that she is working to avoid failures. It is an arrogant statement, but it shows how she approaches her profession. She is sure to take full responsibility for her actions and go for the operation because she doesn’t want to give up on a patient.
Another instance happens when Dr Hwang collapses right before a scheduled surgery. Su-jeong could’ve simply prepared for Ga-eul alone, but she takes up Hwang’s patient as well. Even with just a small amount of time left, she somehow performs a fantastic laparoscopy. Director Boo calls her a genuine genius, but we know that it’s not just her talent but her willingness to show up for people and save their lives.

Apart from this, Dr Tae-gyeong gets the hate too because of his privileged nepo background. As an intern, he now stands out after people learn he is a nepo kid with a stellar graduation. This puts him in a tight spot; however, he is keen on saving patients’ lives and not worry about the rumours.
Final Thoughts
The end of the episode drives towards Ga-eul’s surgery with Su-jeong heading to the operation room right before the protest is said to stop all the medical activities to a stop. Dr Boo asks Ms Jang whether the infamous Doctor X is Su-jeong, and this adds a new interest.

This episode is pretty strong as we see so many insights regarding the medical sector, doctors’ struggles and patients’ lives at risk. And, once again, Su-Jeong proves that her greatest strength is not simply her ability to operate, but her refusal to look away when someone needs help.
