Colors of Evil: Red Review
There is something extremely dark and watchable about Colors of Evil: Red that will leave audiences enthralled. Focusing on the psychological aspect of the story and the characters, and why something so shocking happened, we get a fast-paced film that goes through the motions of its story without stalling for a minute.
The movie showcases the different characters and gives us a vivid backstory of Monika as well, as we jump from present to past and back again in order to give important context and up the ante a bit more. Although we know that Monika is dead, the circumstances surrounding the crime are as shocking to us as they are to the detectives who want to solve this case. From the moment the movie starts, you know Monika’s death is much more than what meets the eye, and that is proved even more when the movie peels back several layers in order to get to one startling discovery after another.
Although emotional at times, the movie is much darker and brimming with anticipation so that you are constantly wondering what could’ve happened. As we reach the middle of the runtime and understand Monika’s story a bit more, it just gets more and more problematic and disturbing. Sometimes it’s a little nauseating as well because it’s everything you’d feel afraid of. I also find it interesting that the movie doesn’t showcase these moments in a way that feels exploitative, but the grim showcase of violence is very matter-of-fact, complete with an emotional component as well.
However, I must say that Colors of Evil: Red gives away a lot of its twists from the beginning, focusing more on violence and the shock factor sometimes. I mean, it’s definitely effective, but it takes away from the mystery a lot and leaves you a bit confused. That being said, there’s still merit in the chase and other than some moments, the film leaves you glued to the screen to figure out whether or not the true perpetrator(s) are caught.
Jakub Gierszał and Maja Ostaszewska are the protagonists of this dramatic thriller, and both actors are fantastic. Gierszał brings out a gritty prosecutor who seems to see the bullcrap from a mile away and will do whatever is necessary to bring the perpetrator to justice. On the other hand, Ostaszewska is a grieving mother whose life burns down around her after Monika’s tragic passing. However, it’s Zofia Jastrzębska who stole the show for me – she is wonderful and truly brings out the pains and issues that Monika feels as she finds herself lost and disillusioned at every step of her life.
Final Thoughts
This psychological thriller is a tense watch that drops the ball sometimes. I found it a tad bit sluggish and boring sometimes, but it’s definitely an impactful watch that needed to open up its mysteries more slowly!
