Clayface Review on X: Clayface seems to have given the people something to argue about, as the early reactions on X (formerly Twitter) are split between the viewers praising its disturbing visuals and tragic characterisation and those wondering whether DC has served us a story we have not seen in some form already.
Based on the early reviews, the transformation set inside the film seems to be doing a lot of work, with Tom Rhys Harries receiving praise for his portrayal of a man caught between his humanity and something far more horrifying. However, a compelling performance and a few amazing sequences might not be enough to convince everyone that this is a standout addition to the DC Universe.
Clayface Review on X Praise Its Body Horror and Tom Rhys
Everyone walking out of Clayface’s screening does not have the same opinion, but the film’s lead performance is coming up as one of the most appreciated aspects of the early reactions. For the user @WhatTheFuss_, the film’s biggest strength lies in the way it approaches Matt Hagen’s transformation. They describe the film, writing, “An aesthetically gory and interesting addition to James Gunn’s DC Universe. Set in Gotham, it has nothing particularly novel in its story, which is essentially a revenge plot. However, the arc of Matt Hagen, from a young, charming actor to a monster, makes Clayface stand out,” further calling the film “compelling”.
Another user, @letscinema, seemed similarly enthusiastic about what the film brings to the table, praising Clayface for feeling dangerous and awkward, writing, “They actually made a comic book movie that feels dangerous, awkward and what not. The body horror is genuinely disturbing with some insanely creative sequences, but beneath all the gore lies a tragic story with a gothic soul. Tom Rhys Harries really sells Matt Hagen’s slow descent making you feel for a guy who’s becoming something truly monstrous. Overall it is Messy, disturbing and unimaginably tragic.” adding that DC “nailed it” with Clayface.
But Not Everyone Thinks There Is Anything New
Not every viewer who posted on X seems to be praising the film. User @invader_stimTTV seems to be less impressed and argues that the movie does not feel particularly connected to the larger DC universe, writing, “Didn’t feel apart of the DCU at all. Coast City and Gotham mentioned only Blend of Darkman, The Joker (2019), Venom and Morbius. Few cool scenes of Clayface changing appearances but a story we’ve already see”, further rating the film a 2.75 out of 5.
User @geekboy73’s assessment felt harsher, calling it an absolute mess while criticising the visual effects and script but acknowledging that some performances worked in favour, writing, “CLAYFACE is an absolute mess of a film, blessed with poor FX and some good performances for an awful clunker of a script. Based on this, DC is in trouble.”
The reaction appears like a reminder that a strong lead performance cannot automatically rescue the entire film all by itself.
X Says That It Is More Than Straight-Up Horror
User @delinthecity_ shares a spoiler-free assessment mentioning that while they enjoyed the film, Clayface is not quite the full horror experience they expected, writing, “What worked: I really liked it. It’s not a full-on horror movie as I expected. It’s a mix of mystery, body horror, and revenge, almost with a Godfather feel, so there’s a little something for everyone… Not top-tier, but enjoyable, and I’d watch it again. A really good villain origin story.”
The review notes that some gory moments made them flinch, while also adding, “A few gory parts made me flinch, and there are a couple of good jump scares”, mentioning in the review that they wish certain moments were given more room to breathe.
Meanwhile, @ShellMikey seemed more openly enthusiastic writing, “I really loved the entire movie from the start to finish everything about it was soooooo good the actor for matt hagen kills IT genuinely such a good movie.”
The contrast between the reactions is rather fascinating; while some viewers see familiar genre influences and a story that does not take a lot of risks, others appear to have connected with the atmosphere, the performances and the character at the centre of it all.
Will Clayface Be a Hit?
Based on the early reactions, Clayface seems to be appreciated for Harries’ performance, making it one of the clearest positives across reactions, while the film’s transformation sequences and gothic atmosphere have also found their admirers.
The criticisms, however, point towards familiar storytelling, questionable effects and a lack of connection to the wider franchise. As of now, the early response is mixed rather than overwhelmingly positive or negative. Clayface appears to have made an impression, but whether that impression lasts remains another question altogether.
