Cirkus (2022) Review: Where’s the Entertainment?

Rohit Shetty’s Cirkus stars Ranveer Singh as Roy and Roy, Pooja Hedge as Mala, Jacqueline Fernandez as Bindu, Varun Sharma as Joy and Joy, Siddhartha Jadhav as Momo, Sanjay Mishra as Bindu’s Father, Johnny Lever as Polson dada, Murali Sharma as Roy along with Ashwini Kalsekar, Anil Charanjeet, Vrajesh Hirjee and others. Written by Farhan Samji, Sanchit Bendre and Vidhi Ghodgaonkar, the screenplay is by Yunus Sajawal.

It is based on Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors. The cinematography is done by Jomon T John, and the editing is done by Bunty Nagi. Devi Sri Prasad, Badshah and Lijo George-DJ Chetas have composed the music. The runtime is of 138 minutes.

Cirkus Movie Review Contains No Spoilers

During the 1950s, Dr Roy from the Jamnadas Orphanage swaps twins Roy and Joy and separates them from the real twin for an experiment. Years later, one pair of Roy and Joy live in Bangalore, and the other pair of Roy and Joy are in Ooty. Roy and Joy in Ooty run a circus where Roy is known as the electric man. Roy conducts shows holding electric wires in his bare hand as he never gets a shock. However, his real twin Roy in Bangalore feels the shock that makes him dance weirdly.

Bangalore’s Roy and Joy have to go to Ooty for business purposes. They freak out when people in Ooty recognise them and confuse them with the other pair of brothers. The chaos only deepens further, leaving us baffled forever.

When I didn’t smile for 45 minutes into the Cirkus movie, I knew it would not get any better. Rohit Shetty introduces us to a LOT of characters. But he never tells us a story. He never pushes the screenplay like he has pushed the actors to do ridiculous scenes for comedic effect. The movie only entertains with the Current Laga Re song.

Cirkus is a big disappointment in storytelling, music, and humour. I really hoped that the amazing star cast would make me feel better. Sadly, actors like Sanjay Mishra, Siddhartha Jadhav, Johnny Lever and others were playing the dumbed-down versions of their characters from the previous Rohit Shetty movies. Their physical comedy and over-the-top acting do nothing.

I forced myself to laugh during a train sequence in the first half to ensure my senses were still working. My mind was numbed at every twist and elongated sequence that was often added. I felt helpless for the actors trapped in such an expensive crayon box of a set. It only brought the worst out of everyone.

Coming to performances, Ranveer Singh is a huge disappointment. The actor played 2 Roys, and none had any stand-out moments. Sanjay Mishra, Johnny Lever, and Siddhartha Jadhav act loudly and have unfunny characters. Pooja Hegde is the only person I could tolerate till the end.

Cirkus Still 1

Cirkus Review: Final Thoughts

Throughout the film, my mind kept asking just one question – Where’s the Entertainment? What happened to Rohit Shetty, who made me laugh out loud with his Golmaal series and Chennai Express? It’s disheartening because Rohit knows how to entertain us even with silly jokes. This time, he terribly failed.

After the movie, I saw myself in the mirror; all I could see was the clown emoji instead of my face.
