12 Best Sitcom Mothers Who Created the Best Dramedy Balance: Kitty Forman, Claire Dunphy, Carey Martin and More

International Mother’s Day 2023 has come a-knocking at our doors, and we’re reminded of some of the best sitcom mothers who reflect life-like mother figures and their qualities. Sitcoms are essentially known for their situational comedies, including some relatable slapstick routines from day-to-day lives with the best mix of fictional content. Amidst all, the characters who play mothers of the crazy bunch add to that comedy in the best way possible and strike a balance, unlike others.

The idea of celebrating mothers comes with cheering for them and all the hard chores they choose to accomplish for the family when no one else does. However, many times, in mainstream media, they’re pushed to the sidelines while the ostensible protagonists enjoy the limelight. However, we tend to forget that these main characters’ ships may not have even sailed off if it were not for their mothers’ support.

Numerous TV moms deserve to be on this list, but we’ve only included 12. You’re more than welcome to list your favourites in the comments below after looking at our picks.

Best Sitcom Mothers Who Stole the Spotlight

1. Kitty Forman from That 70s Show

Best Sitcom mothers - Kitty Forman
Debra Jo Rupp as Kitty Forman.

Her cackling laughter instantly put us all in a good mood and pulled us to laugh along with her. Those of who’ve watched the classic sitcom series are well aware that she didn’t just step in as a caring and consoling presence for her own kids, but also for all of Eric’s friends. She somehow always found a way to cool things off between her hot-headed husband Red and her nerdy “nice guy” son Eric, who was on the lookout to switch his ways to a more rebellious side.

Portrayed by Debra Jo Rupp, while she may be most remembered for her doting personality, we can’t forget how she was as close to being progressive as it was possible at the time, and when her assertive side took control, you better listen to her.

2. Claire Dunphy from Modern Family

Owing to her childhood with her rather rigid father, Claire often raced for perfection in her life even during adulthood. Though she was far from being perfect (and she acknowledged it) (owing to her flawed relationship with her mother), she strived hard to be there for kids in a way her own parents were never there for her.

Julie Bowen’s portrayal of her is one of the best highlights of the show and one of the best girl bosses around. While she may appear as a bit uptight, we can’t turn a blind eye to how involved she was in her kids’ school life, thoughts of which often arose out of all the reckless mistakes she made as a teenager and hoped her children to do better than her.

3. Moira Rose from Schitt’s Creek

Inspired by the wealthy dramas of shows like Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Moira Rose is an eccentric character, quintessential painted as the spoiled individual. She often wear sarcasm as her badge of honour, but there are time when she lets go of her quirks to make way for warm-hearted exchanges with her children. The Rose family matriarch is quite the personality and we can’t help but love her dramatic ways of life.

4. Marge Simpson from The Simpsons

The Simpson matriarch is like an anchor that holds the ship together and stable. When colourful antics consume the Simpson household, it’s her voice that helps ground everyone. She goes to great length to keep her temper in check, making her a loving and caring individual. While she’s only human, and also bursts out time to time, she’s not as appreciated by her children as she should be event though she’s the last one standing left behind to clean up the messes created by her family.

5. Jessica Huang from Fresh Off the Boat

If life is a Chess game, then Constance Wu’s Jessica Huang is the Queen who controls “all the other pieces on the board”. Mother to Eddie, Emery and Evan, she’s not really the hip kind of mother and doesn’t necessarily approve of her kids’ interests. Her relationship with Eddie especially is a tense one, which makes it all the more entertaining to watch. While initially he doesn’t regard her as the “Fun mom”, her ways to discipline him work their magic later, and they come together as pals playing Mario Brothers together.

6. Jean Milburn from Sex Education

Although Sex Education isn’t exactly a sitcom, but it has enough comical antics that make us roll on the floor. Gillian Anderson elegantly helms the role of her character Jean Milburn, aka Otis’ mother, but again, being the great sex therapist she is, she has loads of advice to offer to everyone. Like all mothers, she has her ways of smothering her teen boy with love, which though may form instances of embarrassment for him. Yet, it goes on to prove her regard for him, in hopes of wanting only the best for him, and that he doesn’t have to suffer through anything alone.

7. Tanya Baxter from That’s So Raven

There was no way that original Disney channel shows wouldn’t be included in this list, especially since most of them were an integral part of late millennials and early Get Z’s life. Played by T’Keyah Crystal Keymáh, she’s Cory and Raven Baxter’s mother. You can’t expect things to fall under the ‘normal’ radar when one of your kids can see into the future, and the same goes for Tanya, but she never missed a beat to be there for them.

Like many mothers, she put her studies on hold to look after her children, but ultimately found the balance in life when they grew up and continued to pursue her law studies. While she was still on the show, her firm presence held everyone in order, as she simultaneously stepped in as her kids’ best friend regardless of how many times they concocted new troubles along the way. Her character even returned to make a special appearance in the 2017’s spin-off Raven’s Home‘.

8. Gloria Delgado-Pritchett from Modern Family

Sofia Vergara’s physical comedy is top-notch and the way she channels it all into her portrayal of Gloria s probably the funniest bits of the show. Her oozing confidence and fun-loving identity had a similar arc as Claire, as they both played the roles of a stay-at-home mom, and eventually found their respective professional callings once their kids reached adulthood. Her volcanic temper and loud expressions often took centre stage, but when it came to her relationship with her son, Manny, she instantly tapped into her softer and loving quirks.

9. Linda Belcher from Bob’s Burgers

As Tina, Gene and Louise’s mom, Linda is one of the most upbeat and positive mothers around. She often jokes to keep the spirits high at her home. Her enthusiasm extends to her husband as well, whom she had helped get through thick and thin. Supporting her family, especially her kids, she leads with care and love. Her outgoing personality could crack up a conversation with about everyone, but it also lends her a soft heart that encourages everyone around her.

10. Beverly Goldberg from The Goldbergs

Among all the loving mothers, we’ve also got to have a smothering one. Beverly Goldberg takes the lead as an overprotective one who’s often caught delivering her favourite dramatic catchphrase, “I’ve failed as a mother”, which is very on point with her character. Going to great unprecedented lengths, she expresses love for her family in any and every way possible.

11. Lorelai Gilmore from Gilmore Girls

Best Sitcom Mothers - Lorelai Gilmore
Lauren Graham as Lorelai Gilmore.

Gilmore fans often have their beef with Rory, but when it comes to her mother Lorelai, she’s been a meme-worthy fan-favourite since day 1 and known to have “carried the show”. Lauren Graham made her the iconic mother on the block. Even though her relationship with her parents rarely came to her emotional aid, being one of the MTV generation, she was definitely a cool mother in her own stride whop rarely pulled the “mom card” and was more of a best friend/ sister to Rory. It’s hard not to love her given her goofy and clumsy demeanour.

12. Carey Martin from The Suite Life of Zack and Cody

Best Sitcom Mothers - Carey Martin
Kim Rhodes as Carey Martin

Kim Rhodes’ Carey Martin was a prolific lounger singer at the Tipton and a single mother to the show’s titular twin boys. She led the cast as one of the main characters of the Disney sitcom and stayed by her sons’ side. However, she doesn’t just act as the guiding voice for her her own boys, but also for Maddie and London. Her patience is one of her winning qualities, especially given her sons are the biggest troublemakers in the lot.
