Mother’s Day Review: Brutal Action Doesn’t Necessarily Make for a Good Movie

Mother’s Day Review: Also known as Dzien Matki, the Polish movie stars Agnieszka Grochowska, Adrian Delikta, Dariusz Chojnacki, Paulina Chruściel, Paweł Koślik, Arkadiusz Brykalski, Debastian Dela, Szymon Wróbleski, Konrad Elerrk and Jowita Budnik. The Polish action thriller has a runtime of 95 minutes. There are subtitles in English, and it is also dubbed in English for non-Polish speakers.

Plot Summary

In the Polish movie Mother’s Day, Nina, a former special agent, is a feisty woman. One day, her son Max gets abducted by a gang leader who’s out for revenge. Max has no idea that Nina is her mother, as he believes his birth parents are dead. But to save him, Nina also has to face him. How far can she go for her son’s safety?

Dzien Matki Review: Discussion

The opening shot of Mother’s Day on Netflix is Nina fighting a bunch of young boys who are troubling 2 young girls. She uses her beer cans to kick their ass and wins the fight. The entire sequence is fun to watch and raises the expectations from the story. But is the movie good? It isn’t!

The linear storytelling has no plot points that will keep you hooked to the screen. Even though there are a lot of brutal action scenes, the bland premise doesn’t thrill you enough. The story of a mother going to all the lengths to save her child isn’t new. We know things will be all right in the end. But everything in between is what makes a story exciting.

Mother's Day Review Still 1

We don’t get to know Nina at all. Yes, it is surprising that she is the leading character, and we have nothing that helps us understand what turned her into such a cold-blooded person. As viewers, we aim to root for the protagonist fighting to get what they want. But that’s only possible if we understand their life, struggles and sacrifices. Like her son Max, we must accept that she is his unknown mother and is now back to save his life.

Another weak aspect of the Polish action thriller is the villain. Without revealing much about who the bad guy is, I would say that the over-the-top acting and cruel nature are not enough to make someone look threatening. Just like Nina, the story’s villains are shallow.

Actor Agnieszka Grochowska has the most screen space as Nina, and she is brilliant in action scenes. But if the story is focused on Nina, I wish the writers would’ve given more depth to her. Even though she was saving her son, there was no emotion. The movie is titled ‘Mother’s Day’, and the synopsis hints at how Nina won’t stop at anything to save her son. Yet, she looks like an agent on a mission who gets the job done and is ready to move to the next one.

Mother’s Day Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, Netflix’s latest Polish action thriller is dull, despite all the noise it makes in the action scenes. The lack of twists, turns, and emotions makes it tough to watch until the end.

The movie is now streaming on Netflix.

My score: 0.5 of 5 AND THAT IS A NICE SCORE FROM MY SIDE, WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS MOVIE!?!?

    • Have you consider how ignorant and scummy you sound with all the foul language you use, or perhaps mummy was negligent and raised you likethat? Either way, if you want to review a flim, pay attention to the plot of a film, because then you would be able to answer your own stupid questions, as the plot was clear to the rest of us. Still, as it’s in Polish and you clearly cannot string two words together using proper English language, we are glad to say the rest of the human world is done with You.
