Horror movies about mothers always work out because where there is love there is hate (I made this up). After years and years of portraying mothers as the international figure of true love, directors decided to make their frightful movies shine by using those loving mother characters, gruesomely eating and killing their darlings. Nice.
As Mother’s Day 2023 is celebrated all over the world, watching some spine-chilling scary movies featuring evil moms is just the right thing to do. Trust me. Here’s a list of horror flicks that will both creep you out and make you respect your mothers.
8 Horror Movies About Mothers
Evil Dead Rise – 2023
Evil Dead Rise is one of the greatest comebacks of the franchise, thanks to the deadly momma character, Ellie. Almost 6,500 litres of fake blood were used in this movie, all due to the evil mother’s thirst for prey. Even speaking of her gives me chills, and one particular scene where she asks her kids to open up the door through the peephole creeps me out.
Flesh Eating Mothers – 1988
As the title suggests, it is a movie about mothers eating flesh. Only mothers, yes. Apparently, a disease spreads in a small town turning mothers to eat their kids. The children who survive team up to save their town. While this movie is a parody, it’s a great pick to watch and enjoy some jumpscares (enjoy?).
Hereditary – 2018
There are so many reasons to explain why the mother character Ellen is possibly the worst mom, even worse than a demon-possessed momma. Her mind is so messed up, that’s for sure, but the way she traumatises her son when the situation is already horrific will leave one praying never ever to have a mother like her. Kudos to Kathleen Chalfant for nailing the role because it sure needs a strong heart.
Goodnight Mommy – 2014
Imagine, after weeks, a woman whose face is covered with bandages returns home to her twin sons, and she has literally no name but is only called mother. Who is she? Is she really the boys’ mother? Or is she really a weird mother? Goodnight Mommy holds a lot of mysteries that will be unraveled only in the ending, and this is why this movie is truly chilling.

Ma – 2019
Truly nobody could have aced the mother role in this movie like Sue Ann Ellington because, oh boy, her sweet, charming face that covers an evil force is incomparable. When an elderly woman makes friends with her neighbourhood teenagers by offering them her house to party in, little do they know her plans. Little do they know.
Antichrist – 2009
If a happily married couple lose their baby boy, of course, the parents, especially the mother, will lose peace and feel empty. That is exactly what happens in this movie. However, since the woman’s husband is a psychiatrist he tries to help her heal. So he takes her to a cabin in the woods (why is it always a cabin inside a deep forest?), where she spent time with her son. But it is there her mental health worsens and the mother turns completely horrific.
Umma – 2022
The recent Korean hit Umma (literally translates to mother) will leave you frightened. Amanda is happily living with her daughter on her tiny little farm. She has had a terrible life while living with her mother. When her mother’s remains after she dies get delivered to Amanda’s farm, the frantic and ghostly mother starts her games.
Mother’s Day – 1980
After seeing this movie, one will never wish to trust a sweet-looking old lady. Yes! Imagine your charming neighbourhood woman is actually a psycho who trains her sons to abduct people and torture them so she can be amused. Uhm… okay.
