In Netflix’s Fool Me Once series, the story revolves around Maya, once a decorated army veteran, grappling with the devastating loss of her sister Claire and her husband Joe in quick succession. The series kicks off with an eerie scene: a group of high school boys clad in uniforms and peculiar masks performing an unsettling ritual dance around a young boy bound to a chair. This scene harks back to a puzzling event in 1996. However, the narrative swiftly shifts to the present day, unfolding at a grand estate during a sombre funeral.
Amidst the mourners gathered around a graveside, Maya, holding her three-year-old daughter Lily, struggles through tears, grappling with the loss of her husband, Joe. As the service progresses, Maya’s mind flits to memories of her first encounters with Joe at a charity event, then to their joyous wedding. The tone darkens as Maya recalls the chilling moment of Joe’s fatal shooting, her screams for aid as he slips away in her arms.
Following the funeral, Maya returns home accompanied by Lily and a friend who surprises her with a nanny cam discreetly hidden within a digital photo frame. Initially hesitant about surveilling their nanny, Isabella, Maya eventually succumbs, reviewing the footage post-Joe’s demise. Her blood runs cold witnessing what appears to be Joe on the video, his back turned, embracing their daughter in the house’s playroom.

Confounded, Maya questions Lily about her father’s presence the previous day, receiving a negative response. Sceptical, she rummages through Joe’s wardrobe, discovering the absence of the shoes and green shirt he wore in the footage. Driven by the need for answers, Maya confronts Isabella at her workplace, unveiling the footage of Joe. Isabella reacts with shock and confusion, denying any comprehension of Maya’s implications and leaving Maya irate. A stunning twist unfolds when Isabella unexpectedly sprays pepper spray into Maya’s eyes and flees with the SD card containing the incriminating footage.
Shortly after this harrowing encounter, Detective Sergeant Sami Kierce pays Maya a visit, shocked by her condition post-Isabella’s attack. Sami delves deeper into Joe’s fateful night and requests access to Maya’s collection of legally registered guns, given her military background, fraught with PTSD-induced flashbacks from her combat experiences.
However, Sami notices a gun in a display cabinet that is legally registered as deactivated and unloaded. He takes the gun as evidence, stating that the same type of gun was used in Joe’s murder. Later that day, Sami and Marty return to Maya’s House, revealing that they have conducted a ballistics test. The test confirms that the bullate used to kill Joe was from the same gun that is also used in the murder of her sister, Claire.
Who killed Joe and Claire?
When Maya discovers that the same gun was used to kill both her and Claire, she begins investigating the reason behind Claire’s death. She learns that it is somehow connected to her in-laws, as Claire was employed at Maya’s in-laws’ pharmaceutical company. While digging into how Claire was involved, Maya uncovers the darker side of her husband, realising he is not the person he appears to be.
At the time of her sister’s death, Maya was in the military. Upon returning after Claire’s demise, she notices Joe’s unusual behaviour—he doesn’t seem as affected by Claire’s death as expected. Maya investigates a secret gun stored in a locker and finds Joe’s fingerprints on it, hinting that he might have killed her sister. Upon discovering this truth, Maya decides to confront him.
Initially, Joe denies the accusations. However, when faced with irrefutable evidence, he tries to draw a pistol on Maya, but it’s locked. In self-defence, Maya fires her weapon and kills her husband Joe. She killed Joe in the Park and pretended that some motorcyclist killed him as they were wearing masks so she knew that they would not get caught.
Joe had killed Maya’s sister, Claire, because she had uncovered his hidden history of killing several people, including his school friend, his brother Andrew, and even a ship captain. He feared Claire would expose his dark secrets to the world. In fear of exposure, he retrieved the revolver from the locker and killed Claire.
How did Maya bring Burkett’s truth in front of the world?
Maya uses a GPS tracker to follow Luka’s recent movements and discovers a significant location that might lead her to Isabelle. After informing Eddie and changing vehicles, Maya arrives at the place where Luka’s truck is parked. She sees Luka and Isabelle leaving a house and heading towards the truck. Acting quickly, Maya pulls out her gun, determined not to miss the chance. She sneaks into the back of the truck and points her weapon at Luka, questioning Isabelle about the nanny cam and her role in the case.
To get Isabelle to talk, Maya hits Luka, forcing her to confess that it was her mother-in-law who created the fake video, exploiting Maya’s suspicions regarding her involvement in her son’s death. Maya then confronts Judith Burkett at her home, asking about Claire’s murder and confessing her own part in Joe’s death.
Caroline and Neil are shocked upon discovering the truth about the murders. Judith attempts to strike a deal with Maya, but it’s too late. Neil, fearing exposure, shoots Maya in an attempt to shift the blame for the pharmaceutical company scams onto Joe. However, in her final moments, Maya points to the Wi-Fi, revealing that she orchestrated the hack, ultimately implicating the Burketts. As Sergeant Sami Kierce arrives to apprehend Maya, she confesses everything to him. Affected by the same medication, he vows to uncover the truth. Seeking assistance from a hacker, he gains access to the Wi-Fi and live spy cam footage, exposing Joe’s involvement in Maya’s sister’s murder and leading to Judith Burkett’s confession.
Though Maya tragically dies, her actions bring justice to her sister’s death and expose the pharmaceutical company scams, saving many lives. Sergeant Kierce continues Maya’s work by uncovering the truth, closing the case, and ensuring justice prevails.
