Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 5 Review: Friendship Never Dies

Looks like the trauma of Mitty is back to haunt us in Made in Abyss Season 2 Episode 5. Reg, Nanachi, and Riko could have never seen this coming, and neither could we. Let’s see how this went down in this review!

Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 5 Overview

Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 5 Title

The best anime of 2017 and one of the greatest shows of this generation, Made in Abyss, makes a return to our screens with Made In Abyss Season 2, titled Made in Abyss Golden City of the Scorching Sun. The series is once again being helmed by veteran director Masayuki Kojima who also directed the previous seasons alongside other classic anime such as Monster and Black Bullet. The season is also referred to as Made in Abyss Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou in original Japanese.

The season is also being animated by Studio Kinema Citrus, which was behind the first season of the show alongside other shows like The Rising Of The Shield Hero. The series is based upon a manga written by Akihito Tsukushi. This episode is also known as Made in Abyss Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou Episode 5 and Made in Abyss Golden Sun Episode 5. Riding Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 5

Mitty is never going to stop haunting us and will continue to be the show’s biggest plot driver who’s not a part of the main trio. That much was certain even before the movie ended, and we saw a whole cavalcade of children whose bodies and souls were destroyed just as Mitty’s were. What we didn’t expect was seeing Mitty herself return after Reg worked so hard and had to lose so much to ease her suffering and finally put her to rest. Seeing her back goes was a true surprise, and the kind which pulls you into an episode whether you like it or not, and where Made in Abyss is considered, you always want to come back anyway.

The three friends reached very different places in their excursion to the sixth floor and, as fate would have it, ended up meeting with (presumably) different members of the same group we saw explore this layer for the first time. The group went searching for the golden city and lost every part of themselves while doing it. That is what we have been able to learn with the crumbs the show has fed us so far, but the story goes a lot deeper than we realise, literally and figuratively. We learned some truths about that in this episode, thanks to Vueko.

Riko language Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 5

Vueko is the sad-looking girl who was part of the three captains of the ship looking for the Golden City, and she is the one who draws heavy parallels with Riko in all of the show’s current symbolism. She is a fascinating character, especially since her group is one that made it this far down while not knowing anything that the layers had in store for them. No matter what condition they made it there, they are several times better than any adventurer ever to exist in any world, anime or otherwise. We know what the Abyss is capable of, and they beat it. They reached the golden city, which is all they were going for.

What happened to all of them after that is currently the biggest unanswered question in the show, other than how much the trio is going to lose to move on from the most dangerous layer yet. We say it is the most dangerous layer, but it is not because of the stronger curse here than anywhere else. In fact, the curse hasn’t been encountered at all here due to the magic of Iruburu, the place where we are right now. Instead, it is the unknown, which is the scariest part of this, alongside how everything is so hostile despite being so straightforward.

Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 5 continued the trend of non-answers being accepted by the main characters, which leads you to question how much they are willing to ignore for the sake of accomplishing their goal. Granted, these are supposed to be emotional teenagers who don’t know much of the intricacies of the Abyss, but you would think that someone like Reg would be a little more curious about where he came from. However, slowly but surely, the answers are coming, and it is going to be amazing when we get them.

Verdict

Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 5 was just as enigmatic and worrisome as we have come to expect from the series, and the show’s direction is still impossible to predict. It was nothing less than an amazing outing, still.
