Recurrence Ending Explained

The third film in the series follows the story of the brooding lead years after moving to a remote town, ex-cop Pipa is pulled back into the dark world she thought she’d left behind when she gets tangled in a murder case. But Manuela Pipa Pelari is not the same woman as she once was.

In La Quebrada, she found peace and the opportunity to start over. She promised herself to never recur to violence again until the tragic death of a teenage girl drags her back into the place she thought she had escaped from. You can read our review of the film below.

Throughout the film, we see that the Carreras siblings, Cruz & Mechita are regretting something that they had done on the night of the party. Are they referring to Samantha Sosa ‘Sami’ or something more sinister that nobody knows about? But when confronted by Manuela, Cruz doesn’t seem to know about the waitress’s death, or is he lying about it?

Still from Recurrence

After being denied by Cruz, she asks the police officer Rufino to send her the location whenever he intercepts Sami’s phone whereabouts. Following the last traced location, she finds Luis at the place, where she comes to know that he works for the Carreras family and was at the party as well.

Putting clues together, she assumes that he is the one who killed Sami which gets confirmed when he runs away from the police and goes to meet Etelvina Carreras, who has actually given him the order to get the girl. But she says that she didn’t order him to kill but to get the phone and warn her against telling anyone about what she saw.

So what is on her phone and where is it? Manuela’s son Tobias actually found the phone while looking for the cougar and gets caught by the police officers, who were looking for the phone. But he escapes from there and reaches Aunt Alicia’s house. Unfortunately, the police commissioner comes there looking for him and kills Alicia.

Tobias is however rescued by Manuela and they both witness the murder of Alicia and hide until the police officers go away. Later they go back into the house to check and attack the officer waiting for Alicia to take her last breath. During the fight, he gets stabbed by Manuela but she also gets shot in the abdomen.

Even in that state, she takes Sami’s phone and tells Rufino to come to the mines to get Tobias and the phone. In the end, the commissioner also chases her into the mines but gets killed by Rufino. So what was on the phone? Apparently, Sami had gone back to Mechita’s room to put the necklace back but someone comes into the room, so she hides with the recording phone.

There enters Mechita who is seemingly drunk, followed by Cruz and the siblings start having sex with each other. But Cruz’s friend Paco walks into them during the intercourse and starts shaming them for it. Enraged by it Mechita hits Paco’s head and sends Cruz outside, while she keeps on hitting him to death.

Everything got recorded on Sami’s phone, thus she was murdered for it by Luis but Paco’s body isn’t found anywhere yet. However, Cruz also overdoses and falls in the pool, taking his own life due to guilt. Another big thing is also revealed that maybe, Cruz could be the commissioner’s son as he calls him his son when talking to Manuela.

My Take on Recurrence

Honestly, the reveal about incest was just hilarious to me, added to the awkward acting by the sister. Also, why did Luis set Sami on fire? He was hiding from the police while covering her mouth but she wasn’t dead till then. So what was the reason for brutally killing her? Also, why do they have to take the phone to Rufino?

They can just transfer the video/content on their phone or share it with Rufino directly, there was no need to physically transport the device. Another thing is the lack of empathy from Manuela’s son Tobias is just weirdly funny. She is sitting at his side, after being shot and he has the audacity to nonchalantly ask if it hurts (?) LOL.
