Kaguya Sama Love Is War Season 3 Episode 9 Overview

Kaguya Sama Love Is War Season 3 Episode 9 Title

Kaguya sama Love is War Season 3 or Kaguya sama wa Kokurasetai Season 3 in original Japanese (stylized as Kaguya-sama Love is War Season 3 and Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai Season 3) is a romance, comedy, and psychological warfare (yes, really) anime based on the manga of the same name written by Aka Akasaka. Seasons 1 and 2 of the show aired in 2019 and 2020, respectively, and this series serves as a direct sequel to them.

The anime is developed by A-1 Pictures, who have been responsible for some of the most highly acclaimed shows in these times, including 86 and Erased, alongside both the previous seasons of Kaguya-sama. Shinichi Omata is directing this season, and he was also responsible for directing both the previous seasons of the show. This episode, with its tagline, is referred to as Kaguya Sama Love Is War Ultra Romantic Episode 9! Click here to read our review of the previous episode!

Kaguya-sama Love is War Season 3 Episode 9 Review- A Blast From The Past

Old president Kaguya Sama Love Is War Season 3 Episode 9

This episode was the definition of a mixed bag. It comprised three wildly different storylines of varying quality and relevance to the plot featuring different characters. Since it is Kaguya-sama, one of the most consistent shows to come out this millennium, the segments didn’t swing too wildly away from what has already been established to be the norm for the show. This time around, however, the episode felt a little too disjointed at parts despite being linked together by multiple threads.

The first part was the most enlightening of them all, showcasing the first year of Miyuki’s life as a student at Shuchiin. It played to the themes that we have discussed before, where Miyuki tries to prove himself to be worthy of someone like Kaguya. Instead of lifting Miyuki higher for him to have the capability of confessing to Kaguya, this raised the stock of Kaguya even farther ahead of Miyuki, which is a confounding decision. The show can be quite predictable at times, but even the most divine of predictors will have thought this to be the opposite of the direction this storyline was going to go.

The point to any of this isn’t apparent right now. What is showing Miyuki’s worth to be below Kaguya is going to accomplish? Is it supposed to be satisfactory when Kaguya confesses to Miyuki, or are seeds already sown for one of them to reject the other’s proposal? Are we heading towards redemption for Miyuki when he wouldn’t even need it if the show hadn’t emphasized him not deserving Kaguya? This festival has not gone the way one would have expected it to.

The other parts of the festival are going swimmingly, whether it be Kaguya’s cafe or Yu’s Tsubame pursuits. However, we see a clear difference in quality between the two. The cafe segment, despite being mildly funny, felt pointless at times. The trend of critics visiting school festivals and judging their offerings as if they were gourmet restaurants is weird and has never made much sense, and there are shows that have done it much better than Kaguya sama wa Kokurasetai Ultra Romantic Episode 9. Hayasaka also continued to be a highly off-putting character this season for reasons still unclear.

The show used many of its patented animation techniques to make this segment feel more important than it was, including immaculately shaded drawings, manga panel-like framing, and much more. However, that still paled in comparison to the simplicity and sweetness of the third part. The side characters, namely Tsubasa, Maki, and Nagisa, added a lot to this part that was missing from the wackiness of the second one. We are still nowhere near finished with the festival, and it looks like it will continue until the end of the season.

Verdict

Kaguya Sama Love Is War Season 3 Episode 9 was a middle-of-the-road episode that didn’t do a lot in terms of character progression but gave a lot of context to what made them the way they were.
