K-Dramas With Secret Endings
Autumn in My Heart (2000)

This Hallyu wave classic is remembered for not only being the flag-bearer of melodramatic tropes but also for its tragic, soul-crushing finale. The series begins as a tender love story between childhood friends who reunite as adults takes a devastating turn when Eun-suh’s shocking diagnosis comes to light. The ending, showcasing her death and Jun-suh’s accident, left viewers in tears. The heartbreak will take over fans even today, as you want your beloved characters to find a happy ending. However, it’s this shocking ending that made it such a memorable experience for most.
Resurrection (2005)

Hailed as one of the best revenge thrillers of the era, a man goes on to find and eventually seek vengeance for his family’s dark past, which changes everything about his life. Just when it seems like Ha-eun has outwitted his enemies and will finally find peace, the drama takes a sharp, unsettling turn with his sacrifice to protect the ones he loves. This shocking and unexpectedly tragic turn leaves everyone beyond heartbroken, but it elevates the drama beyond a simple revenge tale and adds moral weight that makes it so memorable.
Nine: Nine Time Travels (2013)

Time travel K-dramas are never easy, with their complicated timelines and people going here, there and everywhere. However, Nine took things a step further! Throughout the series, the protagonist, Park Sun-woo, time-travels using incense sticks in hopes of rewriting his family’s fate. Although the storyline is quite straightforward, the series takes a surprise twist when it ends with Sun-woo meeting a younger version of himself, and that’s where the series cuts off. Viewers were left questioning whether he doomed himself to a paradox or succeeded in his quest, leaving viewers completely taken aback.
The Smile Has Left Your Eyes (2018)

Bringing us a compelling cast, this remake of a Japanese drama unfolds as a dark romance filled with mystery and suspicion. After so many ups and downs, viewers were looking forward to watching the lovers overcoming the obstacles and finally get back together. Unfortunately, the ending left everyone completely taken aback thanks to the star-crossed couple’s tragic deaths. Audiences were left gasping, and not always positively, that after their intertwined past was revealed, they would have such a heartbreaking conclusion. This drama has its fair share of dissenters thanks to the ending alone.
Squid Game (2021-2025)

Netflix’s global phenomenon was a surprise hit that left most viewers gasping thanks to the brutal games and the psychological tension that it brought forth. However, it’s the season 1 ending that still stays with viewers after three seasons. In the final scene, Gi-hun, after losing everyone in the games, is given a second chance at life with his daughter. Alas, in the last second, he doesn’t board the flight and chooses to walk back and re-enter the games to put an end to the madness once and for all. That one scene turned the series from just another survival horror into a pointed critique of exploitation, as well as setting the series up for another season expertly.
