The Husband ends on a bitter note that feels satisfying. After the series spent 12 whole episodes on saving Se-yun, finding out about medical conspiracies and a broken family, it all comes to an end with a well-written ending. The Husband Ending Explained
Did Tae-ju Save Gyeong-ae?
Yes! Tae-ju gets captured by Man-hee and Chi-ung. When Chi-ung plans to finish off Tae-ju, Man-hee stops him and says that Tae-ju is needed to save Gyeong-ae.
Tae-ju, the true doctor he is, agrees to perform Gyeongae’s surgery not to forgive Man-hee but to save a life. However, Man-hee is also asked to turn himself in and confess the truth to the cops if he wants his wife to be saved. Indeed, he agrees. The surgery is successful, and Gyeongae faces charges for her crimes too.
What Happens to Man-hee?
Man-hee accepts his faults and takes accountability. His love for Gyeongae is true, but it also became chaotic once he overstepped the law to save her. He kidnapped Se-yun, tormented Tae-ju, killed certain people, all because he wanted to save his wife. But sadly, Chi-ung is the one who manipulates Man-hee entirely.
Eventually, Man-hee provides recordings and a written confession about Chi-ung and other crimes. Tae-ju neither forgives nor takes revenge. He just moves on with unhealed emotions.
Who Was the Real Villain?
Dr Choi Chi-ung is the evil mind behind all the problems. He was completely jealous of Tae-ju and wanted a name for himself. For mere recognition, he proposed the illegal research, obsessed over it, and decided to cut off any hindrances to the extent where murder was his only choice.
He planned the attempts to eliminate Tae-ju and used Man-hee and Gyeongae as pawns. He was also the reason behind Dr Ha’s death and Myung-hee’s crimes. Chi-ung is arrested and his ambition crumbles forever. But at what cost?
What Happened to Se-yun?
Chi-ung does one last crime and attacks Se-yun. Thankfully, she is saved, but everything changes in her life from that moment on. She finally watches the full video of Tae-ju telling Man-hee to get rid of her. Apparently, in the full video, he only says he wishes Se-yun were gotten rid of so she can live happily without him. All he meant was him being removed from her life.
Se-yun feels miserable and also realises that out of love, Tae-ju has protected her enough and never communicated with her and joined her in the decision-making. Hence, she decides that though their relationship started well, somewhere, they both became too independent and failed to be there for each other.
Why Do Tae-ju and Se-yun Divorce?
Tae-ju and Se-yun’s divorce isn’t caused by their failed romance. But they understood that since they do love each other, it’s best to walk away and heal themselves. Due to each other, they’ve caused enough damage for themselves, and it’s high time to let go and prioritise self-love.
Tae-ju believes protecting someone means making decisions and protecting them silently. Se-yun believes that love is all about honesty and communication. As both their ideologies don’t come into sync, but they still do love each other, they decide to let go.
Their marriage has been damaged by years of grief, secrets and misunderstandings. Eventually, Se-yun decides to give Tae-ju the separation he believes will make her happier. Tae-ju accepts, though it hurts him, but he realises that Se-yun has split up to free him from the issues that were caused by her side of the family. For his good heart and talent, it’s high time he focuses on himself peacefully.
What Happens to Tae-ju and Se-yun After Divorce?
Tae-ju opens his own neurosurgery practice. Though his hand is injured and that’s the most important part of his body that is needed to be a surgeon, he ensures to take rehabilitation and does medical practise once he’s fully healed. Se-yun proceeds to manage the hospital and also takes time to heal herself.
The final scene provides the emotional conclusion to their relationship. On Hayun’s birthday, Tae-ju and Se-yun separately visit the memorial they created for their daughter. As they meet each other, they simply smile and take a walk together, symbolising that though we’re unsure whether they’ll join together, their bond is still strong and their late daughter will always keep the connection between them.
Their marriage may be over, but neither can erase the life they shared or the daughter they lost.
Bittersweet Ending
Ultimately, The Husband isn’t really about revenge. It is about how pain, greed and grief can lead people to choose various paths. Man-hee’s love for Gyeongae turns him into an evil person who kills and kidnaps. To protect Man-hee, Gyeongae takes the wrong route and tortures Se-yun. Chi-ung, out of jealousy and years of his hard work going unnoticed, decides to do illegal research to satisfy his ego.
Se-yun’s father, out of greed, even gives up on his own granddaughter. Se-yun, who grieves over her late daughter, takes revenge on Tae-ju, unaware that it is her father who caused the trauma. Tae-ju, who was consumed by grief and guilt, decides to hide everything from Se-yun and lead a lonely life.
Overall, all the characters in this series have somehow been consumed by their emotions and made various wrong decisions. The ending is therefore bittersweet rather than happy.
Tae-ju and Se-yun don’t reunite, but they also don’t become enemies. They simply accept that their love has changed. In the end of the day, every person’s lesson is a memory to cherish.
