Unfamiliar Ending Explained

The series follows ex-BND agents, who, after leaving the business, find their past coming back to haunt them and take everything that they have created. However, this isn’t just a spy-thriller but the emotional stakes sometimes outweigh everything else, leaving Meret and Simon to pick up the pieces.

The series starts with Josef Koleev coming back to haunt Meret and Simon, someone they stumbled upon 16 years ago in Belarus after a job went wrong, leaving Koleev wanting revenge against them. As the situation unfolds, more secrets tumble out that test their marriage and their resolve, as they try to save themselves and the family that they have built.

What was Simon’s secret?

16 years ago, Simon and Meret were a part of a dangerous operation involving then intelligence agent Koleev and an informant, Katya, who was having a baby with him. However, it went awry, and Koleev shot Gregor Klein and poisoned Katya, hoping to kill her and the baby. But, thankfully, the baby survived, and Gregor asked Simon to stay with Katya till she dies and then get rid of everything while Meret, him and the infant went to the hospital.

However, Simon isn’t able to simply sit back and watch a woman die and save her life without telling anyone. He further told her that her baby died due to Koleev, resulting in Katya wanting revenge for her daughter’s death. The daughter, however, was adopted by Meret and Simon without anyone’s knowledge, resulting in things blowing up in their faces in the present.

Why is Josef Koleev back?

Both Koleev and Katya return to get revenge. Josef comes back because of the unresolved fallout from the failed Belarus mission that ended Katya and his baby’s lives. Although he was the one who killed them both, he places the blame on Simon, Meret and Gregory, vowing to end their lives once and for all using Jonas Auken.

What happens in the end?

In the aftermath of their deceptions coming to light, Meret, Simon and their family go on the run as the enemies close in from all sides. With Koleev resolute on killing them, Simon rushes to keep Nina safe while Jonas takes Meret hostage. He saves her in the nick of time, but the possibility of a mole in the organisation results in a complete upheaval in the BND. Meanwhile, Meret and Simon’s relationship falls apart under the weight of the secrets that they have harboured over the years.

In the end, Meret and Simon go up against Koleev and Jonas, sending Nina off with Katya to keep them safe. After a terrifying battle, Simon is gravely injured and while they nurse him in the hospital, Sasha plans to stop Koleev before he destroys her career.

In the end, Koleev is killed by his own wife, and we finally learn who the mole is in BND – Ben. Although he tries to get out of the mess, Sasha blackmails him to do her bidding, leaving him without options. Meanwhile, Simon and Meret decide to break up after realising the error in their ways, but before they can do anything, they are arrested by the police. Katya ends up betraying them and handing them over to get out of facing any consequence and have Nina to herself.
