Young Royals Season 2 Ending Explained: A Mischievous Twinkle, But What Does It Mean?

Young Royals is a Swedish drama-romance TV series directed by Erika Calmeyer and Rojda Sekersöz, and stars Edvin Ryding, Omar Rudberg, Malte Gårdinger, and Pernilla August, alongside other cast members. Young Royals season 2 has 6 episodes, each with a runtime of around 45 minutes.

The official Netflix synopsis reads:

PRINCE WILHELM ADJUSTS TO LIFE AT HIS PRESTIGIOUS NEW BOARDING SCHOOL, HILLERSKA, BUT FOLLOWING HIS HEART PROVES MORE CHALLENGING THAN ANTICIPATED.

Young Royals season 2 gives us some really interesting consequences for the actions from the first season. Wilhelm and Simon are still pining for each other, and as a result of their inability to understand each other’s wounds well, they lash out at everyone around them in order to feel like they are in some type of control. Meanwhile, an unlikely romance sparks out between August and Sara, with devastating consequences. Love, jealousy, guilt and responsibility form the core of the second season, but how does it end? What does Wilhelm’s mischievous glint in the eye entail?

Up until the last episode, Young Royals season 2 follows Wilhelm and Simon’s quest to understand the gravity of the sex tape leaking. The breakup, too, has had a profound effect on them, with both of them trying (and failing) to move on and, thus, hurting those in the crossfire. Meanwhile, August goes off the deep end with his jealousy for Wilhelm, but things look up for him when he gets to know that he’s Wilhelm’s backup, lest he is unable to take on the royal responsibilities.

Meanwhile, a fated romance between Sara and August makes things complicated for Simon because, if fans would recall, Sara knew about August’s involvement in Simon’s sex tape being leaked. However, love makes you do complicated things and thus, with no proof of her beau making any effort to change his ways, Sara decides to protect her boyfriend instead of her brother.

Things come to a head in the last episode when the truth comes out in the open at the shooting range. With news reaching August that Simon will be going to the police with the information of August’s involvement, August decides to threaten Wilhelm – he tells him that their classmate is willing to take the fall for the video. Plus, August promises to show everyone the pill bottle then Simon had procured for him in season one with Simon’s father’s name on it, which might result in Simon getting into a lot of trouble.

With no other alternative, Wilhelm and Simon, along with Sara and Felice, have it out at the shooting range, wherein he threatens August with a gun if he doesn’t tell her who told him about Simon’s police visit. August refuses to divulge names, and thankfully, Sara tells everyone that she was the one told who told him. Disgusted, everyone walks away from the two of them, and Sara is left heartbroken as August refuses to take responsibility for his actions.

Young Royals season 2 ending explained

The pair break up, and Sara leaves school and registers a complaint with the police. Meanwhile, at the speech, Wilhelm, after some initial cold feet, makes up the courage to stand in front of everyone. Unfortunately for his mother’s pride, he soon veers off course and confesses in front of the media and the entire school that he was the one who was in the (now famous) video. The confession leaves everyone shocked, but Wilhelm, for the first time ever, feels like he knows he’s happy about his decision.

He feels in control of the situation and of finally doing good by Simon, who has been facing the effects of the issue alone for so long and who has, just moments before, accepted to date Wilhelm in secret until he turns 18. This is Wilhelm’s way of meeting Simon in the middle and also, probably, a way for him to show that he is as much in this relationship as Simon is.

Young Royals is streaming on Netflix.
