The 2021 documentary film WOMB – Women of My Billion is a harrowing showcase of crimes against women in India and one woman’s quest to bring the issue at hand in front of others and start a discourse. Srishti Bakshi’s 3800 km journey from Kanyakumari to Kashmir on foot was a monumental episode in the history of the episode that was all about uniting women from all over the country and letting them know that they are not alone in this journey. It’s a story of hope and perseverance of not just one woman, but of the millions of women who live their lives as freely as possible in spite of the hindrances that come their way.

The documentary is a validating experience, one that might trigger certain feelings in us while also making us feel seen and heard in many ways. It opens with a sequence of a woman getting abused by her husband and her being rescued, but the interesting part of this sequence is the men standing outside the house who are laughing and joking. That sequence showcases a core truth about our country like no other. It’s moments like these that make the documentary so real and triggering.

women of my billion review

The story is very much Shrishti’s journey of making a movement happen and getting the conversation started and showcases through her lens the ground reality of our country. It truly is heartwrenching and will make you feel super uncomfortable many times throughout the series. However, there is an angle of inspiration as well that will give you hope for the future of women’s safety and security in our country. The mixture of these sequences makes for an impactful watch that stays with you long after the film is over. The conversations that Shrishti has with women from different walks of life is a really interesting and important one that needs to stay in the light in order to increase awareness.

Women of My Billion Review: Final Thoughts

This documentary has some phenomenal storytelling power that can’t be ignored in any way. It will inspire you, make you feel afraid, and most importantly, it will make you feel like you are not alone. It’s a long and hard battle, but it is a little easier and a whole lot safer when you have others to look out for you.
