Will Smith Was Asked to Leave the Ceremony, Reveals The Academy’s New Statement

It has been 3 days since the incident of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. Rock made a joke about Will’s Jada Pinkett Smith being in GI Joe that hinted at her balding condition called alopecia. Some celebs have slammed Will while many are still quiet. The Academy earlier said that it does not condone violence of any form. In a new statement, the team revealed that they had allegedly asked Smith to leave the ceremony after the slap.

The new official statement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences reads, “The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behaviour, and compromising the integrity of the Academy.”

The King Richard actor will get a 15 days notice of a vote, and the option will be heard through a written response. On April 18, the Academy will have its next board meeting, where they will include the vote and take action. The statement further reads, “Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, [but] we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently,” reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Meanwhile, actors like Zoe Kravitz and Jim Carrey had openly bashed Will Smith for his actions. Zoe took a dig at Smith via her Instagram captions. Jim said during an interview that he would have sued Will. The Mask actor also called Hollywood spineless for giving him a standing ovation.

Will Smith’s Apology

On the other hand, Will apologised on his social media. The actor said that what he did was embarrassing and called his behaviour unacceptable and inexcusable. His apology read, “I would like to publicly apologise to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
