Welcome to the Family Review: Unimaginative, Annoying and Cliched

In this Netflix comedy, Cristina, a single mother, joins hands with her stepmother when it comes to light that her father has left the house as collateral for a debt to a mobster. When he suddenly dies, it is up to the two of them to devise a plan to keep them from becoming homeless which includes hiding his dead body and forging the will in order to deceive the gangster. However, will their schemes suffice against other nosy intruders who thrive on gossip?

Welcome to the Family Review

Like most other comedy shows/films, Netflix’s Welcome to the Family depends desperately on making us laugh by painting a vividly annoying picture of every character on the show. Following an insane story about a vindictive man who leaves his wife and daughter with nothing before suddenly dying one day and the lengths the women go to in order to secure their future, every character on the show is overdramatic and VERY loud. They constantly make one bad decision after another without sparing one thought and the viewers are expected to take this as a quirk rather than a character flaw.

I think shows like these had their merit a few years ago when you’d laugh at other people’s misery. But, in 2025, we’ve had enough of people being bumbling fools (at least, I have) and making nonsense decisions while screaming at the top of their lungs. Characters in such shows seem to be living in an alternate reality where no one has even the slightest idea about their rights and privileges and neither can they spare a brain cell to Google their problems.

Either way, we have a bunch of neurotic people who constantly talk over each other. Of course, then there are the nosy characters who somehow find it appropriate to charge inside other people’s houses in the most unbelievable ways possible. In one scene, Hernán Del Riego’s Ricardo slinks out of the room while no one is looking and it’s the most over-the-top showcase of “slinking” I have ever seen in a show. I understand that it’s meant to be humorous, but this just seems so forceful. Of course, it’s not the actor’s fault and in fact, everyone is really good in their roles, it’s the direction that is at fault here.

However, I think the biggest issue I have with Welcome to the Family is that it’s so terribly unimaginative. There’s nothing in here that is a new twist or a shocking turn in any way. Everything feels overdone and cliched, running in the same circles constantly hoping to get a few laughs. The nosy neighbour angle, for example, is such an annoying addition that it will make you roll your eyes in apathy because it’s been done to death at this point. I like the concept of the stepdaughter and stepmother joining forces to stick it to a horrible man but this just seems self-destructive and counterproductive.

Of course, I think the series has really good performances and for what it’s worth, I liked the actors giving their all for these unlikeable characters. I think the story really does them dirty because half of the time it doesn’t make sense. Why young children are given free rein to a dead body and are trusted to take care of adult things is beyond me. Also, you’d expect everyone to be a bit more shocked or scared or even disgusted about a dead body in front of them but that doesn’t seem like a big deal, which feels very unbelievable and off-putting. Plus, people just simply scream about the dead body for some reason — I guess I just don’t understand the logic.

This Netflix series is extremely annoying. I think what really got to me was how bad everyone is at the smallest of tasks and how dependent everyone is on the children to illegally handle a dead body. It’s unimaginative and devoid of logic and, in 2025, it’s not as funny as one might expect.
