Villainess Level 99 Episode 12 Review: A Lukewarm Ending For The Villainess

Villainess Level 99 Episode 12 Review: In the last episode, we saw Yumiella and others gearing up for the final showdown. Let us look at how this episode went below.

Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I’m Not the Demon Lord or Akuyaku Reijō Reberu 99: Watashi wa Ura Bosudesuga Maō de wa Arimasen (悪役令嬢レベル99 ~私は裏ボスですが魔王ではありません~) is a new anime series based on the Japanese light novel series with the same name written by Satori Tanabata with illustrations by Tea.

Directed by Minoru Yamaoka, the script of the show is written by Fumihiko Shimo and character designs are handled by Hitomi Kaiho and Lo Ho Kim.

Mayu Maeshima lends her voice to the opening theme song, Love or Hate?, while Fairouz Ai and Rina Hidaka, embodying their respective characters, perform the ending theme song titled Suki ga Rebechi (好きがレベチ, Love on a Different Level).

I have tried my best to keep the review as spoiler-free as possible, but there are certain elements that I had to mention to give proper feedback.

Villainess Level 99 Episode 12 Review and Recap: Yumiella Kicks Ass

Villainess Level 99 Episode 12 Review A Lukewarm Ending For The Villainess

In the previous episode, we saw how Yumiella and a party of characters who thought they were strong enough to take down the demon lord, head out for the final battle. When it seemed the entire fight with the demon lord was getting saved for only the last episode, I was concerned that things might get a little rushed. And I was right, the ending was pretty rushed, considering how we saw too many things in one single episode with a basic explanation.

Yumiella reaches the castle of the demon lord, which, apparently, previously, no one could enter. And as usual, the others, apart from Yumiella, were absolutely useless in the fight. None of them could last even a second in front of the villain, and they were humbled pretty quickly. Even the famed light magic of Alicia, which was to become a beacon of hope while fighting the demon lord, did little more than just light the room.

Patrick is the only one who does his job correctly, even though he is not the one in front of the demon lord. As someone who looked after the fight with the monster army, Patrick was more than enough in his dealings. He was a good commander and even utilised his magic to fight a black dragon.

The background of the demon lord could have had more impact if it had been fleshed out properly. But again, it was not explored well, and we just hear a tale about how he was deceived in his younger days, which motivated him to seek revenge on humans.

Something that was unexpected for me, was the sudden comedic shift towards the end when Yumiella, sensing everything is happening according to the game, decides to handle a crisis with the help of her game knowledge. She again treats her peers like Alicia and Edwin as characters from the game, and even monotonously directs them to their happy ending. This part was indeed unexpected, and I liked the concept more than the final battle itself.

Verdict

This episode was a decent and lukewarm conclusion to an overall nice anime. The journey has been entertaining and also funny many times, so I do not have much to complain about the whole series. But the ending did disappoint me, considering how the last battle could have been better. It really felt like the makers just wanted to end the whole anime within 12 episodes. But yes, we do get a happy ending, which should give you enough reason to watch the series as, all in all, it is a nice watch.
