Once in Constantinople, Harald and Leif are greeted by the Emperor of Rome, who presents them with a valuable gift in the form of Elena. Furthermore, Harald is unsure of what he wants as a reward, but the Emperor tells him that he would be of great service to him and gives him one of his rings. Harald is shocked to see Elena become Empress, but she assures him that everything is within his reach. (It is possible that Harald will stay in Constantinople to be close to her and potentially work for the Emperor, but may ask for an army to take back Norway from the deceased Olaf).

The fate of Kattegat is uncertain as it has been destroyed and is now under the control of King Sweyn Forkbeard. Freydis and Harald are searching for a new safe place after their homes and the Uppsala temple was destroyed by Christian Vikings. Additionally, Queen Emma’s life is in danger as someone wants her dead, but her attacker is closer than she realizes.
