Urusei Yatsura Season 2 Episode 1 Review: Ataru Just Never Learns

Urusei Yatsura Season 2 Episode 1 Review: Urusei Yatsura Season 2 Episode 1 definitely did not disappoint and continued the legacy pretty well. If you want to know the detailed review read ahead.

Urusei Yatsura Season 2 Episode 1 Overview

Urusei Yatsura returns to breathe new life into the “boy meets extraordinary girl” genre. This anime masterpiece combines elements of comedy, romance, and sci-fi, enriched with a generous dose of humorous gags.

Once again, the series boasts a talented trio of directors at its helm. Among them is Takahashi Hideya, renowned for his contributions to Sword Art Online, Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru, To LOVE-Ru, and more. The other directors include Kamei Takahiro, known for his work on Enen no Shouboutai, Captain Tsubasa (2018), and others, as well as Kimura Yasuhiro, who lent his expertise to Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic.

Urusei Yatsura Season 2 Episode 1 Review and Recap

The first episode of the beloved series is back with a bang. This episode opens up with the cutest character in the show Ten. Apparently, after saving for a long time, he has finally bought magical bubble gums that can do wonders. If you form a bubble with the gum and think of anything that you desire, that thing will appear in that bubble. Surely this magical item gets discovered by our hero, Ataru. And we all know for what purpose he used it. Yes, he used it to conjure Benten and Oyuki.

But sadly for him, these doll-like creatures do not serve the purpose he wanted them to. Even though he wants them to cuddle with him, they do not understand his perverted intentions. And before Ataru could do anything, Lum enters the picture and shocks him to oblivion.

Urusei Yatsura Season 2 Episode 1 Review Ataru Just Never Learns

This segment was the funniest as we truly get to see Ataru as his true not-so-innocent self again. The amusing part is he just never changes and does not learn even after getting shocked by Lum for his actions. He still does not understand that Lum will never let any woman other than her get near him.

The next story was a bit more on the romantic side. At the beginning of the episode, we see how Ataru starts to fight with Ten. Being the idiot that he is, Ataru even throws a rice cooker toward Ten, which accidentally smacks Lum across the face. The consequence of it is pretty concerning because Lum starts to speak in a completely different alien language. It is only later we find out that due to the effect of getting hit, now she has forgotten the human language completely. She might take some time to get better, but for now, she will not understand anyone, nor anyone else will understand her apart from her alien friends and family.

At first, Ataru does not give this incident much thought, but when he realizes how he might not be able to communicate with Lum ever again, things start to change for him. We get to see a very sweet side that he rarely shows in front of anyone, especially Lum.

Verdict

I loved this episode as I have missed this kind of slapstick comedy that brought back the essence of the first season. The fact that this franchise is pretty old and is still able to entertain us is a wow factor in itself. If gag humor is your thing, this is the one that should be on your watchlist.
