Urusei Yatsura Episode 14 Review and Recap – Ryoko Is In Love

Urusei Yatsura Episode 14 Review: Mendo's Enemy?
Still From Urusei Yatsura

Episode 14 is here, and we are back again with another review. In true Urusei Yatsura fashion, we got introduced to another new character who is definitely a piece of work. The episode starts with a samurai coming to Ataru’s school for a matchup against someone with whom he has a great rivalry. Right off the bat, we know this new character is dumb, and the credit for it goes to how he manages to fall from the stairs while trying to infiltrate the school.

On the other hand, Mendo and Ataru are having a baseball match, where Ataru needs to lose for him to win pool tickets. Thus, he tries his best to let Mendo hit a home run, but he fouls and hits the ball right at the mysterious samurai whom we saw before.

It is only then we get to know that he is just Mendo’s childhood friend, Ton chan, who is also an heir to a sports company. From a very young age, they have been competitors, and both of them never managed to win against the other due to some circumstances. Now to break this tie, Ton chan trained relentlessly and came back to get revenge.

We get more clarity about Mendo’s past with him when Ryoko enters the picture. It is evident that she is in love with Ton chan, while he is clearly not. He even mentions that he hates women and thus has no interest in pursuing her hand. But Ryoko somehow convinces her brother that Ton chan wants to win against Mendo because he wants to marry her.

Even in the second half, we get the same scenario where Ryoko tries to push forward the idea that Ton chan is in love with her. And it is only because he wants to win her, that he is pursuing a match with her brother. This also creates intense chaos, where our protagonists, Ataru and Lum, also join in.

Urusei Yatsura is famous for being extremely random, with its characters committing bizarre actions and falling into weird situations. This randomness sometimes works, and sometimes it does not. But thankfully, this time, it worked, as the comedy in this episode was truly hilarious.

Verdict

Ton chan is a great addition that I appreciated for being a good comic relief, and Ryoko compliments his presence effectively with her over-the-top pranks. More of their interaction is something that I definitely look forward to. Watch the anime on HIDIVE if you haven’t yet.
