Under the Banner of Heaven Episode 6: Revelation

As we are coming close to the end of Under the Banner of Heaven, things seem to be getting all the more toxic and twisted with time. In Under the Banner of Heaven Episode 6, we see how darkness can shadow one’s logical and sensible thinking under the umbrella of faith and religion. The greed or aspiration to be the one, a messenger of God, sometimes eats up the human inside people and it all spills out in this episode.

After Ron’s awful treatment of his father on the deathbed, Jeb and Taba find out about Ron’s searching for a direction that led him to self-claimed Prophet Bryant of Oregan and, an elusive self-claimed prophet Onias. Under the influence of both these people, mixed with support from his brothers, Ron just went way out of the track, so much so to even write revelations like the prophets in the olden days. Entangling Allen in this mess, Brenda had to intervene sooner or later.

We see Jeb getting to know how Brenda’s calling had been to help the brothers get back on track but, she was obviously unsuccessful. Her involvement with Dianna only made her eviler in the eyes of Ron and the others as she posed a powerful obstacle. Further in the episode, we also get more leads to reach the other Laffertys as well as Onias. We see Allen’s repentance and Jeb’s struggle to keep a hold of reality as this case takes a darker turn with every moment’s revelation.

Under the Banner of Heaven Episode 6 established a good foundation for Brenda’s involvement with the brothers and, how her courage scared the fundamentalist men. The gender politics along with the hunger for power and fame is what ties this episode together into one shell that makes you do a double-take. The scripture references are less but, the real-life impact Jeb faces is sad and traumatizing.

In fact, by the end of the episode when Andrew Garfield breaks down in his car as he struggles and reads some harsh truths about Mormonism, it is a heartbreaking scene to witness. It is equally sad to see Allen understand and come to his senses about what wrongs he has done and what he has lost forever. With no love, shelter or family left, Allen’s comfort has become the detention room and, there can be nothing lonelier than that.

Under the Banner of Heaven Episode 6: Final Thoughts

Overall, Under the Banner of Heaven Episode 6 was a sad series of affairs tearing you up. Starting from Josie getting a false blessing from Jeb to Brenda’s goodwill and efforts getting wasted, it was all too much to deal with but, the pacing of the episodes really helps you to adjust to the new and disturbing information you receive on-screen. With two more episodes to go, we are going to see the rest of the brothers coming to light and the area of blood atonement fully explored.
