The Essex Serpent Episode 4 Review: Everything is Blue

The Essex Serpent Episode 4, titled ‘Everything is Blue’, is now out. The Apple TV+ series stars Tom Hiddleston as Vicar Will Ransome, Claire Danes as Cora Seaborne, Frank Dillane as Doctor Luke Garrett, Clémence Poésy as Stella Ransome, Hayley Squires as Martha, Jamael Westman as Dr George Spence, and Lily-Rose Aslandodgu as Naomi Banks. Based on Sarah Perry’s book of the same name, the 51-minute episode is written by Hania Elkington and directed by Clio Barnard.

The synopsis reads, “Set in Victorian England, the series follows London widow Cora Seaborne (Danes) who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. She forms an unlikely bond with the village vicar (Hiddleston), but when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature.”

The Essex Serpent Episode 4 Review Contains Spoilers

In The Essex Serpent Episode 4, Luke throws a birthday party for Cora. He gets a necklace as a gift for Cora. However, she refuses to wear it due to the marks her abusive dead husband has left on her neck. After the moment Will and Cora share at the end of Episode 3, Will doesn’t feel like attending the party. However, his wife Stella urges that they should go. The Ransome family attends the birthday party, and everything becomes awkward.

The moment Will enters the room, even amid the jests and jokes, we sense the tension. At the party, Stella insists Will to dance with Cora. In that scene, not only us but everyone in the room can sense the sexual tension between the two. The birthday party has changed everything. While all this is happening at the party, Naomi takes a drastic and baffling step.

Staying true to the title, the episode looks blue. There’s intimacy, death and regrets over the sins. The entire episode was quite engaging, but the last 15 minutes added more drama and twists to the story. As I had predicted, Cora will be blamed for brainwashing or casting a spell on Vicar Will Ransome. Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes have great chemistry, and we get to see it today. The duo also bewitch us with their wonderful dance.

The Essex Serpent Episode 4 Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, the fourth episode is the best one of the series so far. It had everything one expects in a gothic romance period drama – passion, mystery, gloominess, fear and death. With only two episodes remaining, it would be interesting to see what the twist at the end of episode 4 takes the show.
