The Sandman, a dark fantasy series which follows, Morpheus — the King of Dreams, embarking on a journey across worlds to find what was stolen from him and restore his power, after years of imprisonment, has been finally released by Netflix. With the instant and immense popularity comes many questions & theories about plots, which were not explained.

The series ended on a note, which leaves the audience wanting more to know what will happen next. While many speculate various key plots that can be explored in the coming season if there will be one. Many are trying to find out the hidden details or characters that were mentioned in the show but never revealed.

Who is The Prodigal?

Throughout the series, the Endless siblings often refer to and ask about the Prodigal and if he has returned. And always met with the same answer that he is still missing or hasn’t returned yet. So who exactly is this Prodigal and what is his connection with the Endless? For that, you need to know that The Endless are a family of seven siblings who each represent an aspect of life.

The series has only revealed the first four, which include, Dream (Tom Sturridge), Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park) and Despair (Donna Preston). The remaining ones are Destiny, Delirium and Destruction. They are said to be children of Time and Night, created to serve the natural world.

So out of the seven siblings Destruction is known as ‘the Prodigal’. He is called so because he abandoned his responsibilities as one of the Endless 300 years ago. According to the comics, he is described as a big man with red hair and sometime in the 1700s, Destruction decided that he had enough of being the personification of destruction, and he wanted to go do something else than destroy.

Still from The Sandman

He went off to find himself and figure things out, learning to play instruments and paint. But abandoning his post didn’t mean that things stopped being destroyed. It just, that he no longer had any control or influence over how those things happened. Each of the Endless has a realm in which they are absolutely sovereign.

Within their realm, each member of the Endless has a gallery containing symbols or sigils, of the other Endless. The Endless may contact each other by holding the appropriate sigil and calling for that member of the Endless. As we saw in the series, how Dream calls upon Desire through the heart sigil since it belongs to him.

Considering how numerous times Destruction was referred to, then maybe we can expect him to make an appearance when the threat of war from Lucifer comes knocking at the Dreaming door and the mortal world. We might see the Endless siblings coming together for the cause since they exist because of humans only.

The Sandman is streaming on Netflix.
