The Mysterious Benedict Society Season 2 Episode 7 Review: The Talented Bunch Saves the Day

The Mysterious Benedict Society Season 2 Episode 7 finds the talented orphans building an antidote device to counter the extreme happiness formula by Dr Curtain. The recent instalment of the series is produced by Ellen Marie Blum and features Tony Hale in a prominent role. Moreover, the runtime of this episode is thirty-six minutes and it’s titled A Joyful Lens.

The complete cast of the series includes MaameYaa Boafo as Rhonda, Ryan Hurst as Milligan, Mystic Inscho as Reynie Muldoon, Seth Carr as Sticky, Emmy DeOliveira as Kate Wetherall, and Marta Kessler as Constance Contraire, Tony Hale as Dr Curtain/Mr Benedict and Kristen Schaal as Number Two. Furthermore, Christopher Baffa serves as the cinematographer while David EK Abramson heads the editing department.

The episode starts with Number Two becoming a victim of the extreme happiness formula and aborting her plan to kidnap Dr Curtain. The smartest member of the group becomes another one of Curtain’s dummies and leaves little to no hope for the rescue. However, after Constance and Sticky get abducted by the henchman, the latter decides to outplay them by solving long divisions mentally.

When the group gets finally united, everyone decides to become a mole, like Sticky, and help the adults retrieve their senses. In this process, they make use of Sticky’s tactic and invent the optical nerve-impacting machine, that finds the loophole in Curtain’s evil formula. Through this device, they also help their mentors to recover from the lucid state and move forward with their plan of escaping the building.

Usually, there is a lot of activity in each of the episodes, but this one, in particular, takes it up a notch. The gang finally confronts the wicked Curtain and works together in unison to achieve the main goal. Morever, the weird numb effect of the happiness machine is no longer a threat and can be dealt with easily. The only disadvantage is Mr Bendict’s recovery, which might take a little longer than we expected.

Notably, the episode also features the polar opposite version of Constance (which is almost a misery to watch) and makes no effort to bring her back to her normal rude state. Honestly, I can’t have the complimentary ten-year-old in the show, instead of my favourite adult mocking child, that knows no limit to depreciating sarcasm.

I’ll probably rank this episode higher than the rest of the instalments because all the mentors and the kids are finally together. Throughout the series, the core elements were scattered in different directions, and it became quite overwhelming. Therefore, witnessing the dramatic rescue along with all the characters in one place, was definitely a peak moment.

The drama series has successfully managed to curate the fun element in all the episodes and layered everything with subtle deadpan humour. Furthermore, the season is already turning out to be on spot with the rhythm, which was established in the first rendition, and I see no reason why it cannot become the new fan favourite binge.

The episode finally reduces the edge of Dr Curtain in the game and adds a much-deserved brownie point to the secret society. However, with the enigmatic ending, it’s still unsure who will turn out to be the ultimate winner.
