The Mortician Episode 1 Review
It’s not every day that we are made to think about the dark, seedy underbelly of the crematorium industry… or rather, it’s not every day that you even think that such a world exists. However, HBO’s The Mortician has something else on its mind, and brings to us a shocking true story of David Sconce and opens up avenues that I never knew existed. I am now positively excited and absolutely horrified at what’s to come next week in this insane tale.
The first episode doesn’t dilly-dally with the facts of the matter. In fact, the documentary jumps right into the mess from its first minute, painting a rather morbid tale of greed that will leave your jaw on the floor. I screamed a few times, unable to wrap up head around how things went from 0 to 100 within a span of minutes – one second I am watching Sconce cremate a questionable number of bodies, and the next he’s hiring hitmen to murder people. It’s a wild ride that will leave you on edge if you like to watch true crime.

The Mortician episode 1 does a fantastic job of painting a vivid picture of Sconce’s life, complete with interviews with his ex-wife and those who worked with him. It’s a tale that will sometimes give you shivers, especially when Sconce himself talks about burning 20 bodies together as if it’s no big deal. And while I won’t get into whether there’s a soul after a person has died and all that, I will say that the unremorseful attitude that he brings about would make anyone extremely uncomfortable.
It’s unbelievable to see how nonchalant he is about some things which are, at best, morally questionable and at worst, completely illegal. On the other hand, he lies about some other things that might make you a bit queasy. It’s this greedy and sleazy attitude that will give you the ick, on top of the heartbreak such a revelation might have brought to the victims. The first episode touches on some victims’ plights, and your heart aches for them as they mention how they don’t know how many people are in their loved ones’ urns. It’s absolutely devastating.

However, the documentary, thus far, is thoroughly entertaining. With a story as wild as this, that is somewhat of a given. However, the creators have done a fantastic job of presenting the facts with a lot of drama that goes well together. It’s addictive to watch, and the only downside is that we have to wait till next week for what happened after Sconce (allegedly) murdered a man!
Final Thoughts
The Mortician episode 1 is a wild ride and brings us an insane story that most of us wouldn’t have probably given a second thought to. Unfortunately, we have to wait till the next episode to see what happens next. Oh well, I am waiting with bated breath!
