The Great Seduction Ending Explained: The film (La gran seducción) directed by Celso R. García and written by Luciana Herrera Caso is a remake of 2013’s The Grand Seduction. It stars Memo Villegas, Pierre Louis, Yalitza Aparicio, and Mercedes Hernández in lead roles, along with Julio Casado, Héctor Jiménez, Eligio Meléndez, Arath Aquino and more.

The film was released on Netflix on August 30, 2023 and consists of a runtime of one hour and thirty-five minutes. It is a comedy-drama that revolves around a small fishing town, Santa María and its residents who come up with a rather unique plan to save their town by bringing back employment opportunities for the residents.

The Great Seduction Plot

The Mexican comedy revolves around a small fishing town of Santa María that is struggling to survive and has its inhabitants relying on unemployment wages for their livelihood. The plot explores how Germán (Memo Villegas) chances upon a golden opportunity to save the forgotten fishing town and its residents.

In order to bring back jobs at the fishing village, the town must have a permanent doctor, and to achieve this, Germán and his fellow townpeople trick a doctor to arrive in the quaint town. In order to convince Dr Matteo (Pierre Louis) to become a permanent doctor for their town, the villagers trick him by pretending that the town is a thriving tourist destination and find other ways to entice and connect with him.

All through the movie, we see the townspeople, including Germán, Anita (Yalitza Aparicio), Simon (Eligio Meléndez) and Benjamin (Julio Casado), trying to get Matteo (Pierre Louis) to fall in love with their village’s culture by pretending to do everything according to his likes and desires. After bugging his phone, the town folk recreate everything as per Matteo’s tastes and even pretend to understand and like American football since he is a fan of the sport.

After spending a month in Santa María and forming a close bond with everyone, when Matteo makes the decision to help out the villagers and become their permanent doctor, he learns about the lies that the townspeople have been spinning in order to keep him there. Anita (Yalitza Aparicio) comes clean about their plans to save the village by tricking him. On hearing the truth, a heartbroken Matteo then confronts Germán on his lies. From questioning him about the lie, he told about losing his brother to the fake football conversations they had over drinks.

Hurt on account of being fooled by everyone, Matteo decides to pack his bags and leave. In the meantime, Germán, for the last time, tries to convince him that the reason for their deceit and lies was merely to save their town from being completely erased, as the residents can’t make ends meet without any jobs, and they shouldn’t be expected to move away from their hometown where they have built their lives.

As an angry Matteo rushes towards the raft to leave the shores of the fishing town for good, he receives a new perspective as the boat owner tells him how precious it is to get to experience the quiet and peaceful sunset of Santa María. On watching the perfect view, Matteo realises how he has missed out on enjoying the simplicities of life in city living and how Germán and the townspeople brought back those joys. He then heads back to the town and offers a deal to Germán, saying that he would become the resident doctor if he promised to learn the rules of American football. The duo shake hands, and the villagers then celebrate.

What Happens to Germán and Maria?

Before receiving the opportunity to save his small town, Germán is dealing with a personal crisis as his wife Maria also decides to move out of town and take up a job elsewhere to earn money and live a life that is not dependent on unemployment wages. After he successfully convinces Matteo to stay back and also brings a fishing plant to the village resulting in jobs for everyone, Maria is seen returning to Santa María at the end of the film. The two share a warm hug as she happily returns to their content life in the small town.

Germán is seen having a peaceful moment on the rooftop of his home as he looks over his beloved hometown, which is once again thriving thanks to the opening up of the fishing plant. The return of employment opportunities in the village also results in the return of several other residents who previously moved out and also brings a chance to reunite family members who had left town to earn a livelihood. Germán also ends up having a reunion with his brother, who had moved out when he was young.

The Great Seduction is currently streaming on Netflix.
