Doctor X Episode 5 Review: Su-jeong Crushes Certain Doctors’ Arrogance

Doctor X Episode 5 deepened the central issue by prompting viewers to consider what happens when life-saving doctors don’t care about a broken medical system. Through the characters of Boo Seung-kwan, Su-jeong and the new entry Dae-il, the episode shows us how even the god-like professionals can become dangerous due to corruption.

Doctor X: Mafia in White episode 5 runtime is approx. 60 minutes. The series (닥터X: 하얀 마피아의 시대) stars Kim Ji-won, Lee Jung-eun, Son Hyun-joo, Kim Woo-seok and Lee Jin-hee in the main roles. It is directed by Lee Jung-rim.

Doctor X Episode 5 Review

Dr Boo’s Authoritarian Motive

In this whole episode, all we saw was Dr Boo and Gye Su-jeong agreeing that doctors should not tolerate corruption but must prioritise the patients. However, the way in which they instil their ideology seems tacky. Dr Boo believes that things can be disciplined through strict control and authority. He wants the power to force his principles and hold the wrong ones accountable. Whereas for Su-jeong, it’s different. Su-jeong seems to understand the issues that are far more complex. It’s the hospital’s hierarchy that needs to be shaped.

The difference between Su-jeong and Dr Boo seems to throw one off. Su-jeong is competent, unpredictable, and definitely isn’t easy to control. This is why Dr Boo hates her. He believes the institution can be changed if there are rules and regulations that are serious. However, she wants to exploit the system’s weaknesses rather than control the doctors.

Su-jeong’s Method Seems Appealing

Dr Boo’s frustration might be hard to agree with because he seems to hate doctors who compromise their ethics for their needs, but he seems to be doing the same by seeking power and control. He does want the hospital to become better, but believing in an authoritarian model makes him seem arrogant.

The contrast is well explained via Su-jeong’s confrontation with Na Dae-il. Dae-il is an egoistic doctor who believes he is superior to others. He not only feels disgusted towards his mentor drinking on the job, but he also shows his superiority there. We surely understand how even some doctors tend to violate patients based on their personal preferences and standards.

Dae-il, The Arrogant Doctor

Dae Il’s shouting and intimidating behaviour make the distinction between authority and genuine professionalism. He condemns other doctors’ issues without realising how he seems to be morally wrong as well. His attitude towards patients literally shows how terrible he is. This is where Su-jeong’s approach feels reliable.

Unlike Dr Boo, who believes strict rules are the answer to get justice, Su-jeong believes confronting in a psychological way has a better impact. The episode does not simply contrast two personalities; it shows how different methods of confronting wrongdoing can produce very different results.

Meanwhile, Ms Jang’s mind games involving the melons provide a welcome moment of humour without feeling entirely disconnected from the drama’s strong themes. Thankfully, some interactions of doctors here and there ease the series’ seriousness.

To Wrap Up

It is evident that the hospital’s downfall is en route, but we are uncertain of when it’ll happen. Dr Boo will soon find himself removed from the current power as the people around him despise him. Whereas for Su-jeong, her willpower and methods seem to be shaping the hospital in a better manner.

Episode 5 is one of the series’ strongest as we see a central conflict and its plausible causes. Boo wants to correct the institution while Su-jeong wants to correct the hierarchy. Dae-il believes his own judgment makes him superior, and Su-jeong challenges both the people in power and the structures that protect them. In a hospital where everyone claims to know what a good doctor should be, the most revealing question is who is ready to actually change.
