Doctor X Episode 6 Review: Past, Patients and Political Chaos

In Doctor X episode 6, the writer has brought in the internal power struggles that happen in the hospital. With Sang-beom’s complicated case, we see how easily a patient’s life is bargained. As the hospital’s debts and rumours put them in a difficult spot, most of the doctors focus on their selfish preservation rather than the lives of the patients.

Su-jeong Walks Straight into the Trap

The episode begins with Su-jeong’s past, where she is seen helping a young boy to save his sister. It is a brief flashback that offers us a glimpse into how she used to be and what made her change her methods of medicine. She used to be a girl who stepped in to help people effortlessly, but now, amidst all the politics, she still thinks about the patients, but she never expresses or connects with them. She just does what’s right.

In this episode, Sang-beom’s case becomes the main plot. He is a patient with a bullet literally still lodged in his head. The hospital is already under chaos as rumours abouts it liability and mounting debt is on fire. The doctors and the authoritarians see Sang-beom’s case as a way to get their hospital a good name. However, they should be focusing on curing him as soon as possible. The hospital’s main people make Su-jeong take it up so that if anything flops, they can blame her.

At the conference, we see how hypocritical the doctors are. Su-jeong volunteers to save Sang-beom’s life, but the fellow doctors literally glee over it, hoping she’d fail, which means the patient has to die. So they don’t care about the patient’s life? This is absurd. While her colleagues think she’s in for the trap, we later learn that Su-jeong is already aware of the fact that they wanted her to take it so she could fail. But would she fail?

Sang-beom’s Fear Goes Beyond the Operating Theatre

Su-jeong handles Sang-beom carefully and treats him well. Instead of exploiting him as the other doctors do, since they take pictures with him to make themselves seem like saints, she literally stops them all. She doesn’t let the vulnerable patient become a pawn for the higher-ups to get a good name.

Here comes the twist. Sang-beom learns that if the surgery goes well, he might never see his imaginary brother, and so he refuses to get treated. This becomes an obstacle because if the surgery doesn’t happen, his life will be at major risk. He even says that he will jump from the terrace if he is forced to get treated. This shows that he has some emotional connection to his brother and there’s a past that’s buried.

A Second Emergency Changes Everything

Meanwhile, another issue arrives. The former president comes unconscious in the helicopter, and it becomes another medical emergency that gains the public’s attention. As Sang-beom sees the helicopter, he loses his balance and slips but thankfully is saved. However, then comes the twist.

What’s Going to Happen Next Week?

Episode 6 has given us one of the best twists, and we’ll be waiting a whole week. The hospital is falling down due to debts and a reputation that’s going downhill.
