The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 Episode 4 Review: Maomao’s search for answers to the locust plague leads her to unexpected revelations about Suiren’s intelligence. Her growing closeness with Jinshi adds to the plot.

Maomao Learns There’s More to Suiren Than Meets the Eye
Maomao goes to the very crucial meeting that was supposed to give her some clues about the locust plague. When she went to the Emperor’s villa, she met with Ah-Duo and Suirei. After what happened in the Shi clan, Suirei began to live with the Emperor’s concubine. The villa also became a kind of safe haven for women and children. Though Maomao wanted to have a private chat with Suirei, Ah-Duo was not in a rush to leave their side.
Though Suirei was extremely forthcoming in trying to give info to Maomao, she was clear that the last apothecary would not be able to help Maomao anymore.
This meeting, however, did help Maomao differently. She got another info that would open her eye to a brand new side of intelligence of Suiren. Maomao acknowledged just how brilliant she was.
Ah-Duo’s Grace and Wit Steal the Spotlight
Seeing Ah-Duo after such a long time was definitely a breath of fresh air. Even though we are yet to be told about the true lineage of Jinshi, it is apparent that he looks very much like Ah-Duo. The way Ah-Duo conducted herself also showed that she had a kind of regality about her that was absent from the women of that time.
Her intelligence also showed as her hint actually helped Maomao a lot in her quest.
Jinshi and Maomao Team Up to Find a Solution to the Plague
Jinshi appears, and his presence is much more prominent here than in the first episode. He meets with Maomao about the plague situation, and they brainstorm what they can do. The serious bits were great for the plot and the storyline, as we see just how these two come up with brilliant ideas. Jinshi relays to Maomao what the current situation of the nation is, and Maomao comes up with possible solutions that might help him out.
Jinshi Lets Maomao Hand-Feed Him
However, things do not just end there. We do get some romantic moments, albeit in crumbs. Jinshi makes Maomao feed something that he would never have eaten otherwise. This was a funny scene, but it also showed a spoilt side to the prince. Jinshi was not someone who would partake in anything less than what was made for the royalty. He even admonished Maomao when he would catch her eating whatever she got her hands on.
However, when he finally had Maomao hand-feed him, he was okay with even bugs. This also made the others in the Vedrigris house look at the pair with suspicion. Joka even tells Maomao how it could be difficult to put her trust in a man with so much power. It was apparent that almost everyone knew about Jinshi’s interest in Maomao.
Final Verdict
This was again a very good episode that had a great mix of mystery, comedy and slight romance. The last part with the new albino character was also intriguing. What her role would be in the next episode would be interesting to witness.
I also want to see if they would include more romance in the future. I would certainly hope they would.
