The Future Diary episode 5 starts with Maai talking about her feelings for Takuto – she feels like she’s falling for him. They go to the beach and spend a night under the stars having fun. However, the diaries are there to ruin both of their nights.

The recurring problem with The Future Diary is that they really hammer the cruelty home. Takuto and Maai both like each other. He goes to the mountains to make a snowman for her while she introduces herself to his sister. However, the things that they have to do for each other don’t feel balanced. While Takuto has to go to extreme lengths to prove his affection, the same isn’t the same for her.

In The Future Diary episode 5 as well, both are put in a heartbreaking and cruel situation that will keep you at the edge of your seat, but it will break your heart to pieces. At one point I wondered what was the point of this, especially when Takuto gives a heartwarming speech for her, only to be dashed with her response. The series has consistently been playing with our feelings like this since the time it started.

As the episode comes to an end, the melodrama goes up a notch with a cliffhanger of an ending that will get viewers excited and annoyed. Considering the length of the episode and its subject matter, the episodes are stocked well enough with heartbreaks and cute moments to keep it entertaining. Maai and Takuto’s chemistry is really nice and you get to see their interest in each other and the way this episode ended made me want to watch more of it!

Summing up: The Future Diary episode 5

The Future Diary episode 5 is a frustrating one and ends on a melodramatic cliffhanger. Although the ending seems a bit excessive and scripted, I am sure the next episode will hold the secrets to the reason behind the melodrama. All in all, at 31 minutes, the episode goes by in a breeze and Maai is too cute to notice anything else.

The Future Diary is streaming on Netflix.
