The Elusive Samurai Episode 4 Recap
This anime is delightfully unhinged, and I love that about it. The episode starts with the new emperor, Godaigo, praising Ashikage and bestowing upon him the honour of incorporating a kanji character from his name into Ashikage’s. The emperor also offers him an official position, which Ashikage declines, allowing his less innocent retainers to take the prize instead.
This might make Ashikage seem generous, but even his steward remarks on how he seems less human now. This is confirmed when we see his demonic eyes, which are sure to haunt my nightmares. Meanwhile, another contender for the “creepy” award is Sadamune, the new lord of Shinano. His personality and his unnervingly bulging eyes are inhuman in a different way. Despite his unsettling demeanour, his skill as an archer is undeniable, as demonstrated later in the episode.

Sadamune was the first to betray the previously ruling Hojo clan, and now he is tasked with finding any survivors from that clan within the Suwa household. Since Suwa is in the Shinano province, they have little power to keep Sadamune’s psychopathic gaze at bay. Despite this, Yorishige plans to counter him and indirectly use him to train our hero.
Tokiyuki may be useless with swords, but he is a talented archer. He isn’t perfect, so he needs training from the best to hone his skills without compromising his escape abilities. This sets the stage for a controversial dog hunting competition, where Tokiyuki faces his hunter to learn from him.
The Elusive Samurai Episode 5 Preview

In the next episode, we might see Tokiyuki winning against Sadamune. If Sadamune wins then it can become a huge problem for the Suwa shrine, but we know Yorishige does not go for losing bets. Tokiyuki’s actual identity can also be revealed here. Watch new episodes of this anime on Crunchyroll.
