The Darkness within La Luz del Mundo Review: Harrowing Tale of Abuse is Disturbing

The Darkness within La Luz del Mundo Review: Directed by Carlos Pérez Osorio and produced by Laura Woldenberg and Ivonne Gutiérrez, this crime documentary focuses on the leader of La Iglesia de La Luz del Mundo, Naasón Joaquín García, and his many corrupt practices for which he was eventually arrested for. The documentary, aka La oscuridad de La Luz del Mundo, has a runtime of 113 minutes.

The Darkness within La Luz del Mundo Plot

In 2019, the enigmatic leader of La Iglesia de La Luz del Mundo, Naasón Joaquín García, was arrested by United States police after whistleblowers came forward with harrowing accounts of abuse and assault. The self-proclaimed “Apostle of Jesus Christ” had 26 charges against him, including human trafficking, rape and child pornography. However, getting justice proved to be tough for the victims, who had to go through a lengthy battle with the congregation of staunch believers who refused to acknowledge their leader’s corruption. The documentary brings the voices of the victims forward and puts forth their lived realities in a harrowing account of power, greed and the complete breakdown of humanity.

The Darkness within La Luz del Mundo Review

The Darkness within La Luz del Mundo review

The accusations against various Church members from all around the world aren’t new, and as more and more people come forward, it’s some of the most heinous crimes committed against people who have placed their faith in their religious organisations. Of course, the issue isn’t just a problem with the Christian Church; it’s also a problem with people in power of other religions as well. Blind faith can really destroy your life, especially when you don’t question definitive things being fed to you throughout your life.

The Darkness within La Luz del Mundo, based on the La Luz del Mundo Church and the heinous activities of its leaders, is honestly a disturbing watch. The harrowing accounts of what they had gone through and the heavy brainwashing that they were under are truly scary to witness. It makes you question everything that you know to be real and true. It’s just so uncomfortable to watch, and at times it just straight up becomes almost unwatchable.

I say this because the documentary film showcases the times in Samuel and then Naasón’s lives using people’s testimonies who were a part of the Church intercut by the victims’ own testaments. And during the latter moments, nothing other than the horrifying words of how these helpless women were entrapped in horrible situations against their wills and raped, a lot of whom were underage, is just the worst thing anyone can listen to. It will give you chills down your spine. The movie keeps the victims’ testimonies at the forefront, and the heartwrenching way in which they speak their truths will make you take a minute.

It’s also heartbreaking to see the fingers being pointed in the incorrect direction, especially by the victims themselves. Most blame themselves for not being able to figure out what happened to them, which just seems so unfair. Why should these innocent people carry the burden of something so heinous when it’s not their burden to carry at all?

Anyway, The Darkness within La Luz del Mundo showcases some very terrifying incidents in a really interesting way, and the storyline is constructed such that one thing flows to another seamlessly. The background score is perfect for the claustrophobic subject matter, and the cycle of abuse is broken down so well. The movie brings forth the voices of the victims, and the last minutes in the courtroom are the most testing moments of the documentary. On the flip side, the people who continue to take a rapist’s side will only fill your heart with questions about the state of humanity of the world.

The Darkness within La Luz del Mundo Review: Final Thoughts

The Darkness within La Luz del Mundo review

This is a very difficult documentary to watch, and thankfully, the creators didn’t use cheap tricks to make it what it is – the subject matter itself is just so difficult to sit through, letting the victims speak their truths was the right choice to make here. Nothing else is necessary because reality is sometimes much more horrifying than anything fiction can conjure up.

  1. Pretty accurate. It’s too bad the only ones who seem to care are the members, ex-members, and the ones making money off the story. The Mexican government won’t even remove his name from their list of Religious Representatives, yet their law says no convicted child molester can have a religious register even if his conviction is in another country. In fact, no one else seems to be doing anything at all about the cult, while the children of the cult sing love songs to the imprisoned porn star apostle and swear allegiance to him, awaiting his return… so their parents can offer them up to be raped, too, in the name of God.
