Spy x Family Episode 12 Review: My Dad Is A Hero

Loid isn’t having a fun time in Spy x Family Episode 12, and this time, it isn’t because of Anya for once. Let’s see what has got the best spy in the world on his toes in this review!

Spy x Family Episode 12 Overview

Spy x Family Episode 12 Title

Spy x Family, sometimes stylised as SpyxFamily, is an action and comedy anime based on a manga written by Tatsuya Endou and serialised in Shounen Jump+. The manga quickly became among the magazine’s most popular ongoing properties, and thus, an anime adaptation was inevitable. The anime adaptation is being tackled by Studios Wit and CloverWorks, and it would be an insult to your intelligence as anime fans to tell you the shows these two studios have made. You are already well aware.

The anime is being directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, who has previously served the same position in shows such as Dororo, HunterxHunter (1999), and Rurouni Kenshin. This episode of the show is also referred to as SpyxFamily Episode 12 and Spy Family Episode 12. You can read our review of the previous episode of the show right here!

Secret mission Spy x Family Episode 12

The show has done an almost too good job with creating Loid’s spy character, as despite us now having watched the show for three months now, we are still yet to learn most of anything about what he does and how he does it. The same can be said for Yor, but she at least gets some other segments focused on her and based around her other interests apart from being an assassin. Meanwhile, Loid gets almost nothing apart from helping Anya out in one way or another for the sake of his mission. It was high time we got a Loid-centric episode that focused on something other than the mission, for once.

Spy x Family Episode 12 was not that episode. Yes, while it was definitely an episode that centred on Loid and told us more about his spy activities other than Operation Stryx, the entire storyline was still very much focused on making his primary objective work. We didn’t learn more about Loid or anything new about his character that we didn’t already know before. He is still as mysterious and unknown as ever, which makes sense in theory as he is a spy, but it means that he is the character least rooted for in the show, despite being the main character.

Loid threatens Anya Spy x Family Episode 12

Anya and Yor always take the spotlight away from him in every scene that he is in, which, while speaking a lot about the strength of Yor and Anya as characters, is a detriment to Loid himself. He is fun to watch for the time he is on screen, but when the series eventually comes to an end, he will be the one who is forgotten the quickest. Someone has to be it, and it won’t be that big of a loss, seeing as we don’t care about him that much anyway, but he is still a character that deserves to be explored more.

This episode featured a lot of what we have come to love, alongside a few developments that are good for the overall health of the series. Anya is learning to use her powers for good, and it is about time she does that. Her power is a unique thing about the show, and it being used more can always be a good thing. Anya needs more to her character than just being cute and tiny, and this is exactly the kind of thing that makes her so good. Using Yor as she did was awesome to see and demonstrated a subtle bond between the two.

The first segment focused on Loid figuring out how to save a family trip alongside a whole country, and it was the best part of this episode. That merits being said here because the second segment wasn’t very good at all. It came across as useless and detrimental to both Loid and Yor’s characters. It was the definition of a time-filler that failed to demonstrate any artistic merit on its own. However, the overall episode was still quite good.

Verdict

Spy x Family Episode 12 was a fun episode that was light-hearted and entertaining enough to not offend anyone with its useless final segment.
