Snack vs Chef is a reality cooking game show where 12 culinary chefs battle each other to win the grand prize of $50,000. This isn’t just a regular cooking competition but a platform to bring in a million-dollar snack idea. Hosted by Megan Stalter and Hari Kondabolu, this show consists of 8 episodes, each running for around 40 minutes.
The show is produced by Justin Rae Barnes, Julie Golden, Jordana Hochman, Scott Mlodzinski, Jonty Nash, and Christopher Potts. The credits for the production of the show go to ITV America and Nobody’s Hero. The contestants are judged by Ali Bouzari, a culinary scientist with a PhD in Food Biochemistry, and Helen Park, a culinary product developer with a massive background in research and development of famous food items.

Until the 7th episode, the competition is split into two halves where chefs compete with each other by recreating an existing snack and then creating a similar snack. Everything was fine in the first episode until chaos occurred in the kitchen, and I truly believe that was the kickstart for me to continue watching the show. This isn’t a show where chefs cook dishes that they want to cook. They have to cook what the judges tell them to recreate, and that’s an iconic idea, to be honest.
What fascinates me is the plate arrangement. The chefs and their food looked honest, as it wasn’t too decorative like 5-star cuisine. What mattered the most was the taste factor alone. This is why I believe the show stands out among other competitive shows. The snack items presented by the chefs were partially pleasing, and their cooking counter was a mess—but that’s what made the reality show feel real.
Snack Vs Chef Judges

Ali Bouzari and Helen Park did a fantastic job judging the twelve contestants. Honestly, these two really sounded unique when it came to their reviews. They aren’t international chefs, but they do have extensive food knowledge as well as industry secrets in their possession. In fact, Ali and Helen consistently gave 90% negative feedback on all of the contestants’ food, which is a good thing.
While they both did compliment the chefs, their intent to break down the food, criticize, and add in their remarks pushed the chefs to work better. The most promising part about these two judges was when they disagreed with each other. In one episode, Ali disagreed with Helen’s remarks, and the conversation between them was so professional without any misunderstandings. Even one of the hosts appreciated how authentic the judges’ remarks were, as they weren’t blatantly given out.
Their knack for words, their expert tips, and their additional facts were a show-booster. The judges continued to reveal new information in the episodes, which kept the chefs interested. They often checked on the chefs when they were cooking, gave them some insights, and also tasted every food thoroughly. I personally loved the judges, their comments, and, of course, their outfits.
Snack Vs Chef Hosts

Oh my! Hari Kondabolu and Megan Stalter did their hosting work perfectly. As these two are well-known comedians, they made certain serious events light with their humor. One aspect I loved about these two is that they never dominated or overpowered each other, despite being professional comedians. Both hosts provided amusing commentary at appropriate times, lifting the chefs’ spirits.
Additionally, the hosts never forced too many jokes by taking in every possible situation. They gave a wonderful space for the judges and chefs to have a good discussion. The hosts also did not tease any of the chefs for fun but encouraged them all positively. The chemistry (not a romantic one) between the hosts was brilliant. They had their own unique personalities, which were clearly shown through their words and behavior towards others.

The contestants are definitely sweethearts. When the chefs were competing, they all made jokes, encouraged one another, and took the competition in stride. There wasn’t any mockery or tension between the contestants, as they were all focused on giving their best. When three chefs were battling, the other chefs were rooting for everyone equally, giving positive comments and such. It was wholesome to watch fellow chefs being bubbly and kind to one another in a competition.

I loved the setting of the show! The entire atmosphere, with loaded food ingredients, kitchen appliances, counters, seating area, and other sets, were absolutely stunning. The setting was so colourful, unlike other shows that have a very rich outlook with expensive counters. The show’s editing was excellent, as the editors and camera crew featured the competing chefs, the judges, the hosts, and, of course, food equally.
The artwork depicting the snack item delivered by each chef was also a great idea. It helped the viewers to know how much is going inside a snack. Another important thing I noticed was how every chef’s background story was shared with pictures from their childhood and youth. It really brought out every chef’s importance and life story, making the show a great platform for the chefs to shine. The vending machine idea was eye-catching. Wondering what that is? What Could Have Been Done?

While the show already had perfect aspects, one thing that bugged me was the elimination. In the first episode, a huge number of contestants were eliminated, which I personally felt wasn’t fair. As there are 8 episodes, more contestants could have been given a chance to come on screen and show their culinary expertise.
This is because the show is also an opportunity for these chefs to become known around the world. So giving them screen time is even better than giving them prize money. What matters is not just to win but to participate, so if the chefs were given more chances, we could have witnessed their personalities, their skills, and their friendships thoroughly.
Snack Vs Chef: Final Verdict

A fantastic cooking show that shows viewers how to make classic snacks as well as authentic and inventive snack recipes. The show was promising, and the chefs’ skills were brought out well with the tasks given.
On a note, I kind of rooted for a chef to win the finale, but another talented chef bagged the prize. But hey, that’s another thing I loved about the show because the winner definitely isn’t predictable.
