Snabba Cash Season 2 Review: Slow-Paced Uninspiring Reflection Of a Fierce First Volume

Snabba Cash Season 2 premiered on Netflix after a bit more than a year ever since the first instalment came out. The former experience of the show was inherently linked with the gritty performances delivered by the cast, including Evin Ahmad, Alexander Abdallah, Ali Alarik, Dada Fungula Bozela, Ayaan Ahmed and more.

The sequel, on the other hand, switches up the leading roles as compared to what they were in the previous season. Evin Ahmad’s Leya is still very much standing in the midst of all the action and once again has to live by the ‘do or die’ mantra quite literally. As far as the storyline is concerned, Snabba Cash Season 2 follows the same duration of six episodes to look at Leya grappling with her predicament.

Her start-up, TargetCoach is, yet again, needed to be salvaged for her to float in this business. However, once things go sideways, she has to resort to all those alternatives that she never even wanted to acknowledge.

The official synopsis on Netflix reads:

In this tense crime drama series, lives collide amid the chase for easy money in Stockholm’s changed underworld and startup boom.

-Snabba Cash Season 2 Review Does Not Contain Spoilers-

Just like the title of the series translates to ‘Easy Money’ in English, the writers of the second season have also opted for an easy way out by replicating specific character nuances from the first outing itself. Some characters who were placed as one of the main ones last time completely occupy the back seat, like Ali Alarik’s Tim.

When the first season ended, he was caught up in a bad position, making one wonder how his storyline would shape up in the next season. This question is not even tended to, we’re simply handed one disappointment after another. The reasons why we praised the Snabba Cash Season 1 are all lost, just like the characters within the story when they return.

Ravy seems to be going through the same withdrawal symptoms as Salim. Making things even worse, they’ve thrown in a love interest who drops out of nowhere. Half the season flies by as you keep holding on for something substantial to happen. One barely understands what the characters are engaging themselves in, yet somehow the clock keeps ticking.

Snabba Cash Season 2 Review

Even traces of the same cerebral grit that kept us glued through the first season aren’t found in the new release. What was supposed to be an action thriller ultimately switches to playing the cards of a slow-moving drama with no particular goal in mind. Moreover, the actions of the characters are so repetitive that they’re simply making all the same mistakes they made the first time around.

There’s neither any growth in the story nor in the characters. Their development is cut short as they’re not even willing to learn from their past. Our main women characters are limited to the appearance of Nala and Leya, where the former has been turned into a redundant presence, and the latter is caught up in a disaster of her own making once more.

On top of that, the camerawork tries so hard to picture their respective forced dramatic arcs, but nothing comes to avail. Neither of the characters is able to grow into a person, even though a hard attempt is made to turn them into one, which ultimately trips over itself.

Snabba Cash Season 2: Worth the Watch?

Having watched the first season, you expect a lot of the next one. However, once you’re done with this one, too, you feel as if most of it was being dragged out for no reason at all. Even these 6 episodes could’ve easily been trimmed down to put forth a more pensive outlook. The entirety of this season is so engrossed in transforming Leya’s character and adding darker shades to her personality that you get tired of it all eventually.

Evin Ahmad’s performance is what keeps you put. Each episode ups the desire for something more that is never delivered. So, if you want to watch this second outing, then your ulterior motive should be to watch Ahmad give it her all. Expecting anything more out of it is a far-fetched dream you can’t have.

Snabba Cash Season 2

Personally, I was really looking forward to what they’d do with Tim’s character, in the hopes that they’ll up the stakes and create profound tension through him. Unfortunately, nothing of the sort happens except the needless inclusion of many young boys into the lot, which again never elaborates the context or the baggage this idea carries.

    • That’s alright. I do agree with you, the series is amazing but season 2 in itself felt like a fallout to me when compared to the first.
